Here are a few memorable examples:</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">US shows embassy bug to expose Soviets</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">In May 1960, U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Soviets of espionage, producing before the Security Council a wooden Great Seal of the United States which had been presented by a group of Russian citizens at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Lodge then extracted a tiny microphone out of the eagle's beak with a pair of tweezers, and said dozens of listening devices had been found in U.S. embassies in communist bloc countries. "From what plays were these props taken and when will it open?" the Soviet delegate responded. Khrushchev's granddaughter later recalled the Soviet leader had new tight shoes on, which he had taken off when he took his seat. He had started by banging his fists to protest what the Filipino was saying, until his watch fell off. For now, no one knows whether Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo?s administration will allow this controversial natural gas drilling process to go forward.</p><p>So far, officials in the Cuomo administration have indicated that the drilling might initially be limited to five New York counties above the Pennsylvania state line where the formation known as the Marcellus Shale is thought to be the most productive. But gas industry officials have cautioned that the extent of the gas deposits will be unknown until they start to drill. The Marcellus Shale spans more than two dozen New York counties, from Chautauqua and Erie in the west to Green and Albany in the east.</p><p>While many New Yorkers worry that the drilling could result in groundwater contamination or mar the beauty of the landscape, some are actually hoping that drilling will come to their areas along with jobs and royalties paid for leased land.</p><p>The uncertainty is affecting both sales and relationships in the real estate market. Many buyers who are concerned about the environmental risks of the drilling complain that some real estate agents skirt the issue.<br /><span id="more-148735"></span><br />Annie M. Van Assche, 62, a computer trainer who lives in Astoria, Queens and has been hunting for a property in the Catskills?where she could raise alpacas and grow organic produce, said she resented that lack of candor. ?I?d ask, ?What?s the situation with fracking up here?? ? she said, an agent might typically reply, ?I haven?t been following it.?</p><p>Ms. Van Assche is now considering expanding her search to Maine and Vermont.</p><p>John Pratt, an opponent of fracking who lives in central Sullivan County and is treasurer of the county board of realtors, said he was candid with clients and that he would make sure they were aware of the issue before closing a deal. ?I tell my clients that I am against fracking and a proponent of alternative energy solutions,? he said.</p><p>But Mr. Pratt said he generally sold in areas that are unlikely to see drilling. ?I focus on selling in areas not currently being leased to gas companies, and I also sell in the area of the Neversink Reservoir, where I think we can safely say fracking will not be taking place anytime soon,? Therein, Mississauga, Ont.-raised, Montreal-residing Chilean-Canadian director Carlo Guillermo Proto turns the camera on his morose father, Gustavo, whose grip on reality is loosening by the day; and on his mother, his sisters and, especially, himself, as they try to deal with their clan?s floundering patriarch.</p><p>Proto?s grandfather committed suicide; his grandmother suffered from Alzheimer?s disease. His 58-year-old father has acquired traits from both, carrying around a lifelong death wish and watching his short-term memory slip away as he attempts to accomplish everyday tasks.</p><p>El Huaso is a poetic word for cowboy in Chilean Spanish, with variations including countryman, loner, outcast and noble horseman. While he waits for death ? and tells his family that he will bring it upon himself if his mental state worsens ? Gustavo dreams of returning to Chile and becoming a huaso.</p><p>Against his family?s wishes, he makes the trip, finding peace at a ranch where he can care for and ride horses, and be in the moment.</p><p>?I?m going to Chile alone, as a way to prepare my family for when I?m not here,? he says.</p><p>But while the experience makes things better, it doesn?t erase the emptiness he feels inside. His family struggles with his fatalistic attitude. Proto travels to Chile to make sure his dad is okay, and talk to him about his history of depression.</p><p>Gustavo?s anxiety is contagious, Proto tells him. We see the director in therapy, struggling to come to terms with his feelings about his father. He, his sisters and their mom confront Gustavo about his plans to take his own life and what it would mean for the family ? to no avail.</p><p>He is free to do as he pleases, Gustavo stubbornly tells them, while his duties as provider weigh heavily on his heart.</p><p>Though the subject matter is dark, Proto injects moving lyricism into his tale. There is respect for his father, who can be heard expressing his views in even-toned voice-over. And there is indeed a nobility to his quest, however ill-conceived.</p><p>Technical details enhance the treatment: the imagery, by Benjamin R. Taylor, is meticulous and carefully balanced, while the atmospheric soundtrack, by Mitchell Akiyama, carries languorous emotional depth.</p><p>After playing at the Rendez-vous du cin?ma qu?b?cois last year, and Toronto?s Hot Docs in April, El Huaso screened on CBC?s Documentary channel in June.</p><p>There is a shocking epilogue to this tale, which won?t be revealed here to preserve the filmgoing experience. El Huaso may not put a spring in your step, but it will touch you in a way that most films don?t.</p><p>Director Carlo Guillermo Proto and cinematographer Benjamin R. I don't expect a big lift in steel demand," Zhang Dianbo, assistant president of Baosteel, told reporters at an industry conference in Dalian.</p> <p> At the same event, Liu Xiaoliang, executive deputy secretary general of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_5">Metallurgical Mines Association of China</span> said some 40 percent of China's iron ore mines have suspended operations as a slump in prices means they are losing money. Liu predicted iron ore prices would stay between $90-$110 in the next two years.</p> <p> As demand for steel has dropped, the price of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_3">iron ore</span> - a key steelmaking ingredient - fell to 3-year lows below $87 a tonne <.io62-cni> earlier this month. [ID:nL4E8K4012]</fmg.ax></vale5.sa></p> <p> LOSS-MAKING PLANT</p> <p> The Baosteel plant, in Shanghai's Luojing district, produces steel plate used in the construction industry and for making ships and oil rigs. The company, which bought the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348731492_7">plant</span> for 14 billion yuan ($2.22 billion) in 2008, said in a statement it had been losing money due to weak demand and high costs.</p> <p> It halted its first furnace in July last year, according to a report in the weekly Investor China. The second furnace, which was losing 100 million yuan a month, was suspended earlier this month, the paper said, citing a worker at the plant.</p> <p> "With demand from shipbuilders so weak, other producers such as Angang Steel are also facing pressure," said Helen Lau, senior metals analyst at UOB-Kay Hian. She said further suspensions would depend on whether steelmakers could compensate losses from other profitable units.</p> <p> Lau said the Luojing plant was more costly to run because of its technology, with its furnaces using the Corex smelting process of gasifying non-coking coal to produce pig iron.</p> <p> A Baosteel source, who has worked at the plant, told Reuters the facility would eventually be shut as part of broader plans to relocate operations away from Shanghai.</p> <p> Chinese steelmakers, already battling over-capacity, have been struggling with razor-thin profits or losses since Beijing clamped down on the real estate sector, hitting steel demand.</p> <p> Baosteel's first-half profit more than halved, excluding one-offs, and the company has forecast that steel prices will remain under pressure this year. Baosteel shares last traded up 0.4 percent on Thursday. The Republican candidate's impromptu tutorial came as a series of new polls found that after months of a close race here between President Barack Obama and Romney, the GOP's chances in Ohio appear to be slipping away.</p> <p><span id="more-52464"/>A New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday found Obama leading Romney among likely Ohio voters by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent. It came on the heels of a Washington Post poll released on Tuesday that found Obama besting Romney by 8 points in the state.</p> <p>They were the third and fourth polls in a row to find Obama expanding his lead in the Buckeye State?a move that prompted ABC News to change its projection of Ohio being a "toss up" state in November to one that "leans Obama."</p> <p>As Romney spoke, Obama was campaigning on the other side of the state, holding his own rally at Bowling Green State University. There, the president lit into his Republican opponent, accusing Romney of wanting to gut education by giving wealthy Americans a tax cut. He also seized upon Romney's suggestion captured in a secretly filmed video at a fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as "victims" and are too dependent on the government.</p> <p>"I don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as victims," Obama said.</p> <p>The dueling visits by Obama and Romney offered a hint at what has been one of the GOP candidate's major problems in Ohio: He's been largely outmaneuvered by his Democratic opponent, who has lavished money and attention on Ohio since he took office.</p> <p>According to his campaign, Wednesday marked Obama's 13th visit to the state so far this year?and his 29th since taking office. That does not include an appearance Obama made in the state just days before he was officially inaugurated in January 2009?a visit many at the time said was the unofficial kickoff to his 2012 campaign.</p> <p>According to National Journal, Obama has significantly outspent Romney when it comes to television advertising in the state: Obama dropped $41 million since May compared with just $21 million by Romney. Outside Republican groups have made up some of that ground?chipping in about $20 million in ads in the state, according to National Journal?but the Obama campaign has spent tens of millions more building up its staff and ground operation in Ohio. And the effort appears to be having an impact on the polls, especially on the issue of the economy.</p> <p>In Ohio, a state that has been hard-hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs, the Romney team believed it would benefit from voter angst over the economy. But while the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll found the economy is still the top issue for Ohio voters, Obama now holds a 6-point advantage over Romney when it comes to who voters believe would do a "better job." When presented with the same question in polls during July and August, the candidates were tied.</p> <p>Romney still has an advantage on the economy among Ohio independents: According to the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll, 51 percent of independent voters think he would best handle the economy, compared with 45 percent for Obama.</p> <p>But Romney is being hurt by his drop in support among women voters, who overwhelmingly prefer Obama on the issue of the economy?59 percent to Romney's 37 percent. Overall, female voters in Ohio prefer Obama in the race, 60 percent to Romney's 35 percent.</p> <p>The Romney team has worked to make up its deficit among female voters in Ohio and other battlegrounds, appealing to them through television ads on issues like the growing federal deficit?one of the few areas where Romney continues to have an advantage over Obama.</p> <p>Nevertheless, Romney aides have refuted any suggestions the candidate is in real trouble in this state. The Romney campaign has downplayed public polls, insisting its internal numbers show the race much closer?though it declined to offer specifics.</p> <p>Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rich Beeson, Romney's political director, said the race in Ohio is still "inside the margin of error" and accused the Obama campaign of "spiking the ball at the 30-yard line." But he declined to say whether there is a path to victory for Romney if he can't win Ohio.</p> <p>"The public polls are what the public polls are," Beeson said. "I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign on what the public polls say. We don't. We have confidence in our data and our metrics."</p> <p>In response, Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki trotted out her own sports metaphor, so to speak, likening the campaign to a horse race.</p> <p>"We don't get too whipped up when we're up, or too whipped up when we're down. And we're running this race in every single swing state like we're five points down. If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," Psaki told reporters traveling with the president.</p> <p>But, she added, "As time progresses, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them. As noted by the Center for Media & Democracy (CMD), NFIB is bombarding the 2012 election with money and is the lead plaintiff against the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ?Obamacare.? NFIB Exposed aims to reveal the forces behind the small business organization.</p><p>For example, NFIB received $3.7 million from Karl Rove?s Crossroads GPS, which overwhelmingly supports Republicans; even though 32% of small business owners identify as Democrat and 29% identify as Independent or other, according to a poll commissioned by American Express OPEN in 2009.</p><p>After Crossroads GPS, Donors Trust, a fund set up for rich Republicans, is the next most significant donor, contributing $1.5 million to NFIB (for the 2012 election cycle). Donors Trust also heavily contributes to the Koch Brothers? Americans for Prosperity. Indeed, Donors Trust throws big money at a variety of other groups that then contribute money to candidates, lobbies, non-profits and various other forms of legalized bribery.</p><p>As Mother Jones reported in July:??Few among the legions of small business owners that it represents will benefit from its lobbying. Only 3 percent of small businesses net more than $250,000 a year, the lowest income that would be affected by Obama?s tax plan. This is one reason why a variety of rival small business groups now accuse the NFIB of doing exactly what it was founded to prevent: selling out small business owners to benefit the rich and powerful.?</p><p>?NFIB has spent an unknown, but significant, amount of money and institutional cach? fighting common sense proposals to give workers the right to earn sick time,? notes NFIB Exposed. ?However, a recent small business survey by NFIB found that providing mandatory sick and family leave was not a critical concern of NFIB members.? NFIB Exposed points to NFIB?s own study, which found that opposition to mandatory family or sick leave ranked 64 out of 75 amongst the organizations concerns.</p><p>The strategy here is: use NFIB to hoodwink Americans into believing that the majority of small business owners support the GOP. But an official at the Japan-China Economic Association said Toyota Motor Corp Chairman Fujio Cho and Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of Japanese business lobby Keidanren, and other representatives of Japan-China friendship groups would attend an event on Thursday in Beijing.</p> <p> The risks of military confrontation are scant, but political tensions between Asia's two biggest economies could fester and worries persist about an unintended incident at sea.</p> <p> "If blood is shed, people would become irrational," Koichi Kato, an opposition lawmaker who heads the Japan-China Friendship Association and will travel to Beijing, told Reuters.</p> <p> "NOT CUTTING EDGE"</p> <p> For the Chinese navy, the addition of carriers has been a priority as it builds a force capable of deploying far from the Chinese mainland.</p> <p> China this month warned the United States, with President Barack Obama's "pivot" to Asia, not to get involved in separate territorial disputes in the South China Sea between China and U.S. allies such as the Philippines.</p> <p> U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in turn urged China and its Southeast Asian neighbors to resolve disputes "without coercion, without intimidation, without threats and certainly without the use of force".</p> <p> Narushige Michishita, a security expert at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, said he thought the timing of the launch was unrelated to the islands dispute.</p> <p> Rather, experts said it might be associated with China's efforts to build up patriotic unity ahead of a Communist Party congress that will install a new generation of top leaders as early as next month.</p> <p> "China is taking another step to boost its strategic naval capability," Michishita said. "If they come to have an operational aircraft carrier, for the time being we are not super-concerned about the direct implications for the military balance between the U.S. and Japan on the one hand, and China on the other. This is still not cutting edge."</p> <p> The East China Sea tensions with Japan were complicated on Tuesday by the entry of Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing calls an illegitimate breakaway, which also lays claim to the islands.</p> <p> Japanese Coast Guard vessels fired water cannon to turn away about 40 Taiwan fishing boats and 12 Taiwan Coast Guard vessels. Six Chinese patrol ships were also near the islands but four left, leaving two nearby but not in waters Japan considers its own.</p> <p> Japan protested to Taiwan, a day after lodging a complaint with China over what it called a similar intrusion by Chinese vessels.</p> <p> Taiwan has friendly ties with Japan, but the two sides have long squabbled over fishing rights in the area. China and Taiwan both argue they have inherited China's historic sovereignty over the islands.</p> <p> The flare-up in tension comes at a time when both China and Japan confront domestic political pressures. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government faces an election in months, adding pressure on him not to look weak on China. A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.</p> <p>Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in <em>Physical Review Letters</em>.</p> <p>"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."</p> <p>The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.</p> <p>The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment,power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.</p> <p>"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.</p> <p>Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Veterinarians attempted to resuscitate the cub with CPR before pronouncing it dead. How do you perform CPR on animals?</p> <p>Pretty much the same way you perform it on humans, with some adjustments for anatomy. CPR is appropriate when a patient?s heart has stopped (whether? or not the patient is human), and the goal is to maximize the amount of blood flowing out of the patient?s heart into other vital organs and to get some air into the patient?s lungs so the patient?s blood will be oxygenated. Some animals, including humans and baby pandas, have bodies shaped in such a way that the best way to pump the heart is to directly compress the chest. Other animals, Iike most dogs and cats, have much rounder chests, which makes it harder to directly compress the heart. With these animals, vets recommend compressing the chest from the side, which puts secondary pressure on the heart.</p> <p>As anyone who?s recently taken a human CPR course knows, the rate of compression recommended for humans is about 100 beats per minute. (Doctors recommend pumping the chest to the beat of the Bee Gees song ?Stayin? Alive.?) The same rate of compression is recommended for animals; even though dogs and cats have a higher resting heart rate than humans do, the rate of 100 compressions per minute gives the heart a chance to refill with blood between compressions.</p> <p>CPR consists of both compression and ventilations (at a recommended ratio of 30-2). With most mammals, vets recommend closing the mouth and breathing into the animal?s nose to effectively ventilate the lungs. More effective still is a tracheal tube inserted into the animal?s throat, but mouth-to-snout ventilation is better than nothing.</p> <p>Most scientific research on animal CPR has been done on dogs or cats, but there?s no reason to believe the same principles wouldn?t apply to other animals, too. It?s very difficult to do CPR on large animals, like adult elephants and llamas, but baby elephants and llamas may respond to it. Likewise, CPR can be adjusted to smaller animals: Vets perform CPR on parrots, for instance, by placing the bird on its back and compressing its keel bone with their finger. Together for Adoption</a> </h3> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <div class='post-body entry-content' id='post-body-6040063967367034552' itemprop='description articleBody'> <p> <strong class="by author vcard"> by <span class="fn">Dan Cruver</span></strong> <em class="date">Published Sep 24, 2012</em></p><p><img align="right" alt="" height="332" hspace="5" src="http://www.togetherforadoption.org/wp-content/media/HFO_SBTS_T4A.jpg" width="358" />Do we really have time for the robust study of theology when there are so many issues of social justice that need our attention (orphan prevention, family re-unification and preservation, kids aging out of foster care, the support of indigenous adoption efforts, etc)? ?Do we really have time to study the theology of adoption when there is so much to be done in the word <em>now</em>? Isn?t it enough that Scripture commands us to care for the poor and marginalized? Shouldn?t we <em>just get to work</em>?</p><p>As I written before, if we think of theology merely as what can be known about God, as the collection of unearthed biblical information about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, then these questions are legitimate. But if by theology we mean a real relational knowing of God, an ongoing and growing experience of our Triune God, then these questions lose their bite. Yes, theology necessarily involves information about God. Scripture is full of it. But information to theology is like H20 to Niagara. Although you can?t have Niagara without H20, there are water faucets all over the world that drip drops of H20 every few seconds, but those intermittent (and annoying) drops of H20<strong><em> do not Niagara make</em></strong>! What makes Niagara a world renown waterfall is its seemingly ?infinite? supply of H20 to dazzle and amaze us at its power and beauty.</p><h3>A Mere Collection of Facts?</h3><p>The theology of Adoption is so much more than a collection of biblically gathered facts about God. Theology is ultimately our <em>real</em> (genuine) participation in the Niagara-like-overflowing mutual knowing and loving of the Father and the Son in the communion of the Spirit. This is why I said that theology is infinitely more than true statements about God. The study of theology and honest-to-goodness communion with the Triune God must go hand in hand.</p><p>No one?absolutely no one?was and has a greater theological mind than the Son of God. He has forever known the Father through-and-through. For all of eternity past the Son perfectly knew and communed with his Father. Remarkably, this is the Son who became man, who became incarnate and <em>lived among us</em>! By becoming the incarnate Son, Jesus brought <em>his</em> eternal communion with the Father into the world of men?into the very heart of our broken and sin-devastated world! That?s the good news of the Gospel!</p><h3>Not a Word Against His People</h3><p>In his very insightful thoughts on Jesus? High Priestly prayer in John 17 (where we find words like the following coming from Jesus? lips: ?Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world?, v. 24), Marcus Rainsford beautifully writes:</p><blockquote readability="13"><p>?The whole is a beautiful illustration of our blessed Lord?s intercession at the right hand of God. Not a word <em>against</em> His people; no reference to their failings, or their shortcomings; no allusion to what they had done; none to what they were about to do as a body?No, He speaks of them only as they were in the Father?s purpose, as in association with Himself, and as the recipients of the fullness He came down from heaven to bestow upon them? (<em>Our Lord Prays for His Own</em>, pp. 100-101).</p></blockquote><p>Thank about it: there is not a love in the universe and beyond that can fuel social action like the eternal love into which we have been brought to participate ? the eternal love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Of this love, C.S. Lewis? childhood hero, George McDonald wrote:</p><p>?The secret of the whole story of humanity is the love between the Father and the Son. That is at the root of it all. Upon the love between the Son and the Father hangs the whole universe . . . The love of God is the creating and redeeming, the forming and satisfying power of the universe . . . It is the safety of the great whole. It is the home-atmosphere of all life . . . The whole of the universe was nothing to Jesus without his Father. The day will come when the whole universe will be nothing to us without the Father, but with the Father an endless glory of delight.?</p><h3>The Heartbeat of T4A and Its People</h3><p>If you ever want to know what beats in the heart of T4A conferences and events, it?s the eternal love between the Father and the Son. Communication lines were also limited to email and chat rooms. Since the advent of the World Wide Web, the internet evolved into an online community where we get to have identities that are separate or closely knit to our personal lives.</p> <p>The influx of internet users gave bloggers and other personalities an open window. For them it was a chance to make readers out of internet users and this holds true until today. If you want to follow their footsteps, one of the first things you should do is analyze how people use the internet. A deep understanding of these trends can help you be a better blogger since it allows you to address their needs.</p> <p><strong>How people use the internet</strong></p> <p>1. <strong>Communication</strong>. These days, people still use the internet for communication but its reach has extended well and beyond. People can now communicate through instant messaging (IM) services, social networks, forums, and blog comments in addition to email. Today, you can communicate through voice and video; not just in written words.</p> <p>2. <strong>Social networking</strong>. People often use social networks to get in touch with family and friends but they can also be used to meet new individuals based on the same interests.</p> <p>3. <strong>Sharing, transferring, downloading, and storing files</strong>. With the availability of high-speed options, file servers, cloud services, and torrents, more people are using the internet to download, share, transfer, and store files in a virtual pool.</p> <p>4. <strong>Entertainment</strong>. People go online these days to play games, stream music and videos, and find other sources of entertainment.</p> <p>5. <strong>Learn about the latest news</strong>. When people hear something from social networks for the first time, one of the first things they do is look it up at search engines.</p> <p>6. <strong>Find information</strong>.
