Republicans heap blame on Obama for Afghan crisis

A crisis in Washington's relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai sparked attacks Sunday on President Barack Obama, as Republican presidential candidates heaped blame on him for the troubles in the US exit strategy.

Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum assailed the president on separate television talks shows as creating an untenable situation by setting a hard-and-fast 2014 timetable for a US withdrawal.

"If the game plan is we're leaving irrespective of whether we're going to succeed or not, then why are we still there?" asked Santorum on ABC's "This Week." "Let's either commit to winning, or let's get out."

The attacks from the right came as the administration was struggling to contain the fallout from a massacre of 16 villagers, many of them women and children, by a US soldier who allegedly went on a rampage March 11 in southern Afghanistan.

The White House said Obama and the Afghan leader reaffirmed their commitment to the 2014 withdrawal plan in a phone call Friday.

But Karzai's warning that he was "at the end of the rope" and public demands for an earlier pullback of US troops to their bases underscored the yawning divide between the allies at a time of sharply declining public support for the 10-year-old war in the United States.

Republicans seized on the issue to accuse Obama of failing to heed his commanders demands for more troops, for withdrawing a surge force too soon and failing to demonstrate US commitment to a successful outcome.

"I think it is plain to see that the conditions there are not going very well," said Romney on Fox News Sunday. "And I lay part of the blame for that on the lack of leadership on the part of our president, both in terms of his interactions with Karzai and with leaders there as well as his relative detachment from our military commanders there."

"This does have the indications of a similarly failed withdrawal or a failed completion effort on the part of this president, just like we saw in Iraq. He likewise failed in the way we left Iraq," he said.

But neither he nor Santorum, who are vying to run against Obama in November, were clear about what they would do if they were in the president's place.

Santorum said he agreed in some respects with former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a rival for the Republican nomination who said last week it was likely the US mission in Afghanistan was "not doable."

Romney said the current timetable should remain in effect "unless of course there are changes in conditions that suggest a faster withdrawal."

Advocates of an extended US presence in Afghanistan, meanwhile, argued that the decline in US public support for the war reflected a loss of confidence in the US strategy.

"Do we know what we are doing when these incidents happen and President Karzai makes the statements that he has done," said Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US ambassador to Kabul under president George W. Bush, on CNN.

"It raises questions in the minds of people, do we know what we are doing? Are we succeeding?"

Senator John McCain, a staunch proponent of a large and continuing US military presence in Afghanistan, disputed the perception that the mission was failing, insisting that the relationship between US troops and Afghanistan "is wonderful."

If Obama does not accelerate the withdrawal of US forces, he said, "we can withdraw with a stable government in Afghanistan."

He acknowledged, however, that the massacre of civilians "really sets back everything a great deal."

Success In Writing, Publishing And Marketing ... - The Creative Penn

by Joanna Penn on March 18, 2012

There are a number of key influencers in the publishing blogosphere, and Jane Friedman is definitely one of them.

I have been reading Jane?s articles and following her tweets since I started blogging myself, and she continues to give fresh perspectives that help authors as well as others in the industry. So I am excited to bring you this interview with her. Audio, video and text is below.

In the introduction to the podcast, I mention what I have been up to: the release of the ProWriter courses with NY Times bestselling author CJ Lyons, speaking at a publishing conference, how my business model is becoming a reality and my progress on Exodus, Hunterian and rewrites of my career change book. I?m also off down under next week to Australia and New Zealand. Ok, on with the show!

Jane Friedman is a former publishing and media exec who now serves as Assistant Professor of e-media at the University of Cincinnati. Jane is also Contributing Editor at Writer?s Digest and speaks on writing, publishing and new media seemingly everywhere.

  • How Jane?s career started with a degree in Creative Writing and then moved into corporate publishing at F&W Media where she spent 12 years. She was publisher of Writer?s Digest so was writing and publishing about writing and publishing! She also specialized in learning about the trends in self-publishing so has been aware of the market for the last 10 years and how things have changed.
  • Changes in ebook world. The exponential growth of ebooks in traditional and independent channels. The growth is a lot slower elsewhere but in the US, the growth is huge. At some publishers it is above 20% now. The other component is not just ebook sales, but online purchasing of print or electronic which is what impacts the brick & mortar stores. This trend will change book buying. There are also a lot of new tools available. Jane mentions Pressbooks which makes it easy to create professional ePub files. Vook which may be a competitor to iBooksAuthor ? multimedia ebooks with very little training.
  • On the importance of print. My own opinion. Jane talks about print on demand for those indie authors whose customers demand some kind of print. The more interesting side are the special print editions that are a luxury product for fans. This is high quality, hardcover, special edition that is customized or personalized. I mention Cory Doctorow?s special hardbacks priced at $275.
  • What?s broken with traditional publishing and are they changing? The print/return model to bookstores and the lack of transparency in reporting. Big publishing is responding to these issues but slowly and only when it benefits them. Simon & Schuster have introduced a more accurate reporting platform for their authors. But publishers are not feeling the financial pain of the existing model. Advances, royalties, return model still make them money. Jane mentions Mike Shatzkin?s site which is a great site for publishing news.
  • On discoverability and platform. The importance of meta-data, making sure all the fields are completed and accurately tagged and categorized so that your book comes up in search. Being algorithm friendly is important. Creative marketing online is another aspect and this is a combination of your own story, your own strengths and also your target audience. There is a sweet spot for everyone. Look at who you want to attract which will drive your strategy. It does need to grow organically and not just be ?me too? marketing. Jane has a great article on author platform here.
  • On author platform and then the breakout novels that aren?t related to the size of a platform. This is out of our control ? is it just luck? It?s hard to break down the breakout novels that do crest on media mentions, serendipity and other factors we can?t control. There is magic but we can only be prepared by putting in the effort to try to kickstart the process. People are impatient. People put in a few weeks of effort and then wonder why they aren?t a bestseller yet. Set tasks that you can sustain for months and then adjust as you understand what people respond to. It?s a continuous journey and if you?re new to marketing, there is a lot to learn. The ?overnight? success often comes from years of persistence.
  • Jane wrote a tongue-in-cheek book on The Future of Publishing, which I recommend. She says ?You can?t be just a writer of stories and books anymore?, and this is true depending on your priorities. Jane mentions the Seth Godin comment that writers shouldn?t expect to make money anymore. The old attitudes don?t cut it in this new world.
  • On introverts and marketing. Jane and I are both introverts. Before social networking, marketing was foreign. But the new ways allow us to connect in non-threatening ways that allow us to be authentic and real. This is life-changing! It?s not about a pushy, fake persona in marketing. It?s about being you and this is sustainable over the long term.
  • On twitter. Jane has over 150,000 followers. Jane was an early adopter but didn?t understand it initially and so abandoned it. Once she had figured it out, she loved it and used it strategically. Her early start was part of the growth of her account. She was one of the first people in writing and publishing tweeting useful links and has stuck to this strategy. She tweets 3-6 times per day and doesn?t use it very conversationally. Twitter has had an amazing impact. Jane explains some of the opportunities that have come her way through the connections she?s made online. [I second this - Twitter, along with blogging, has changed my life.] Social media opportunities also snowball over time. It doesn?t happen immediately. Have patience. Be authentic. Enjoy the process.

Online Automotive and Diesel Higher Education Options

Working to repair and manage automobiles is a possibility for students that complete the correct training. Students can pursue online education through an automotive and diesel degree program. Several online schools provide students with training to prepare them to be experts inside the industry.

Students can earn an education to become auto mechanics, diesel mechanics, and motorcycle mechanics. The availability to start and finish a training program online makes education convenient for students. Training programs are highly awarded at the certificate and associate?s degree level of education. Students should research their options to decide on the best training path that matches their interests.

Students that work through an auto mechanic certificate or degree program will learn how to work with cars, trucks, and other motorized vehicles. Certificate programs often provide a concentrated education in one specific area of the field. For example, students will study general mechanics as they learn about air conditioning or suspension repair. Troubleshooting electrical issues and mechanical problems are some main areas of focus inside a program.

Associate?s degree programs are the best way to prepare for the industry because they provide a thorough education in automotive technology. Students will learn about engines, fuel systems, wheel adjustments, and more. Some common courses that are taken within an auto mechanics program include:

  • Transmission Repair
  • Engine Performance
  • Brake Maintenance

Students that have a desire to work with trucks, construction vehicles, buses, and other heavy machinery can gain the needed skills inside a diesel mechanics program. Online schooling inside a certificate program provides students with the knowledge in basic areas such as ignition, exhaust, and intake components. Troubleshooting and repair is a high emphasis in an associate?s degree program. Training is more advanced than a certificate program providing students with the skills to enter the industry ready. Common courses that are completed include:

  • Arc Welding
  • Hydraulics
  • Diesel Electrical Components

Online training may not be offered fully online due to the amount of hands-on training that is needed to understand repair. Students are able to take general education and basic theory courses online and apply them to their diesel mechanics education.

Another specialization that can be entered into is motorcycle mechanics. Students will obtain a highly focused education where they learn how to work with motorcycles, dirt bikes, mopeds, and other small-engine vehicles. A certificate program examines how to maintain two and four stoke engines. The use of power and hand tools is covered to prepare students for repair work. Motorcycle repair for both American and foreign bikes is covered when students complete an associate?s degree program. The focus of education is to train students to diagnose problem areas and fix them. Other areas of study may include repair shop operation and repair estimation. Common courses may include:

  • Drive Systems
  • Exhaust and Emissions Control

The completed coursework inside an automotive and repair training program provides students with all the needed knowledge for a career.

Begin learning about mechanics today by enrolling in an accredited online automotive and diesel college. You can receive the best education by making sure the program you choose is fully accredited by an agency like the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence ( http://www.iatn.net/ase/ ).

Classic Auto Furs - Beauty, thy name is Cord

Since I've strayed a bit into hot-rod territory, here's a step back to the classics. The 1937 Cord 810 "Westchester" sedan.

The Cord 810/812 series were remarkable automobiles. Equipped with front-wheel drive, super-charged engines, and streamlined bodywork, they were among the fastest cars of their decade. And with features like hidden headlights, (which were operated by cranks on either side of the dash), the signature "coffin-nose" wraparound grille-work, and exposed side-exhausts (on the supercharged models), they made a very visual statement. With all that going for it, the 36/37 Cord was a failure. (as was the L-29 Cord that preceded it in 1929) The 1930s was a poor time to introduce a high-end luxury car, and the car's mechanical complexity led to mechanical issues and production delays. All in all, slightly less than 3000 cars were built in total. Surprisingly few still exist, sedans like the one in the picture being the rarer.

Problems or no, the Cord 810 was voted as one of the "Ten Most Signifigant Automotive Designs of the 20th Century" by the automotive press.
