'Possession' is a low-rent take on 'The Exorcist'

Diyah Pera / Lionsgate

"Possession" is reportedly based on a true story about a spooky box that terrified its many owners.

By Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: We?ve had zombies, demons, vampires and ghosts. Why shouldn?t a dybbuk -- the Judaic version of the possessing spirit -- have a chance to finally shine again on the big screen? Representing a sort of equal opportunity religious variation on an all-too-familiar theme, "The Possession"?is a Jewish-themed "Exorcist"?that, if nothing else, should discourage the practice of buying antique wooden boxes at flea markets.

PHOTOS: The 10 least scary movies of all time

Such a box, carved with Hebrew inscriptions, causes no end of havoc in this low-rent horror film receiving a typical dog days, end of summer release. It comes into the possession of the Brenek family, or rather the splintered Brenek family, since father Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been separated from his ex-wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick) for a year, causing predictable emotional difficulties for young daughters Hannah (Madison Davenport) and 10-year-old Em (Natasha Calis).

Em persuades her dad to buy her the ominous looking box, unaware that its previous owner, an elderly woman, has wound up immobilized in bed after being handled rather violently by the dybbuk inside it.

Said dybbuk soon finds a new host in the innocent young girl who, like?Linda Blair?s Regan, starts displaying violent, anti-social behavior. But while at first her symptoms prove hardly distinguishable from those of a typical troubled adolescent, an invasion of giant moths in her bedroom prove the need for drastic measures, or at least a good exterminator.

PHOTOS: Iconic horror movies

After a quick consultation with a professor, Clyde heads to Borough Park, Brooklyn, here depicted as so awash in Hasidim that it resembles a 19th?century Polish shtetl. There he enlists the aid of a rabbi?s son, Tzadok (played, in a canny bit of casting, by the Hasidic hip-hop/reggae star?Matisyahu).

After a medical procedure that reveals that dybukks are visible on MRIs, they get down to the inevitable business of a Jewish exorcism, performed in perhaps the most poorly securitized, empty hospital in North America.

Director?Ole Bornedal?("Nightwatch") indulges in the usual cheap scares induced by ear-shattering bursts of volume, frequently punctuating scenes with blackouts and ominous piano chords. But despite young thespian Calis? impressive ability for malevolent staring, her character is never all that frightening, with her possession often signaled by dark eye shadow that makes her look mainly like a young goth chick.

PHOTOS: Europe's horror fetish

The adult performers go through their properly anguished paces with professionalism, with Morgan displaying his usual relaxed charisma and Sedgwick displaying even more levels of anger than she did as the hard-boiled deputy police chief in "The Closer." But Matisyahu, while a likeable screen presence, seems to have been cast less for the quality of his acting than for his copious facial hair.

Much is made of the fact that the film is ?based on a true story,? with the press notes even including an excerpt from the original ad on Ebay attempting to sell the infamous box. But there surely must be easier ways to drum up the price.

Repairing Your Bad Credit By Using Bankruptcy

There are a number of inescapable circumstances that will make one declare bankruptcy. If you are an American citizen facing such a situation, you can help yourself by filing for bankruptcy. When you file a case of this nature, you will be given an opportunity to repair your bad debt. All you have got to do is adhere to the regulations of Chapter 7. If you do that, you will be in a position to fix your credit without losing anything.

In the event where an organization is declared broke, the law demands that the organization ceases to operate, or file for bankruptcy so as to gain monetary stability again. If the case is authorized, the organisation will get the benefit of having the debts discharged.

If you are an individual curious about filing a bankruptcy case to fix your credit, you will only qualify if you show proof you are not able to pay off the debts. You need to make use of a bankruptcy lawyer so as to give yourself guidance on how the entire process is done. In some cases, your movable and immovable assets could be given to a trustee who will auction them. The point of doing this is to raise money to repay the debts.

When you file for bankruptcy, you will have sufficient time to re-arrange yourself so that you repay the debt without having your assets impounded. When you file this case, you?ll get reduced interests on mortgages. This is why you must take advantage of this option to clear your loans.

If you want to repair your credit by employing bankruptcy, you can do so by utilizing either debt elimination, or debt repayment options. Both are good methods of relieving your stress due to liabilities. However, the debt elimination is the more appropriate option, only if you can qualify for it.

Paul Mascia, founder and Chief Executive of The Mascia Law Firm, spends a large amount of his time assisting those affected by the latest debt and housing emergency.

TSX closes near two-week low, hurt by oil, banks

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks dropped sharply on Thursday as investors pared back expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will signal a new round of economic stimulus, brushing off surprisingly robust earnings from three of the country's big banks.

All ten of the benchmark index's main sectors were lower ahead of the much anticipated speech by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke at a meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

"The market is expecting that we won't necessarily get anything definitive tomorrow out of Jackson Hole, or if we do, that it's already reflected in equity valuation levels," said Paul Taylor, the chief investment officer of fundamental equities at BMO Asset Management.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed down 123.14 points, or 1.03 percent, to 11,886.65. It was the biggest one-day fall for the index since early July.

The index at one point hit 11,875.05, its weakest level since August 15.

Limp data on the U.S. labor market coupled with signs that consumer spending remains steady added to the pessimism as it neither pointed to a robust recovery nor a bleak environment in which the Fed would be forced to act.

"In some ways you hope that economic data is weak enough that it forces the Fed's hand. The risk is that it's a little bit better than awful and therefore the Fed is not compelled to intervene," Taylor said.

ENERGY LEADS DECLINE

Toronto stocks were led lower by a 1.5 percent decline in energy shares that followed a drop in U.S. crude prices. U.S. crude fell as oil companies assessed damage after Hurricane Isaac's trek through the region.

Financial stocks were among the biggest weights even though three big Canadian banks reported better-than-expected results and dividend increases on Thursday.

The sector had enjoyed a two-day rally after Bank of Nova Scotia and Bank of Montreal upped their dividends and beat profit estimates earlier in the week.

However, Bank of Nova Scotia fell 2.4 percent to C$52.30 after it said late on Wednesday it would buy ING Groep's Canadian online bank for C$3.1 billion.

Toronto-Dominion Bank

was down 1.1 percent at C$80.65 on Thursday even though it narrowly beat expectations for quarterly profit and raised its dividend by more than expected.

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce dropped 1.4 percent to C$75.35 even as it said profit rose 42 percent on higher lending volumes.

But Royal Bank of Canada , the country's largest lender, bucked the trend, rising 0.66 percent to C$54.96 after it announced a surprise hike in its dividend on the back of a 73 percent rise in profit.

"On the whole, the core Canadian banking franchises are still relatively stable and intact," said Gareth Watson, vice-president for investment management and research at Richardson GMP.

"Credit quality is not deteriorating too quickly, although in this environment it's not improving too markedly either," he said.

Analysts said investors were also looking ahead to a European Central Bank meeting next week at which President Mario Draghi is expected to flesh out his plans to buy euro bonds. His hints at such a move in August was credited with helping steady global markets.

"Europe is the problem, and that's where we need some solutions for other places around the world to feel more comfortable," Watson said.

This book cover image released by Dutton shows "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer. A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11. Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen?s ?No Easy Day? will ?set the record straight? on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011. ?Mark Owen? is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden?s third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). (AP Photo/Dutton)

(AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was shot in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two shots, but the book doesn't make it clear who fired them. He wrote that the point man had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the man crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. Only when they wiped the blood off his face, were they certain it was bin Laden.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

Administration officials briefing reporters in the days after the May 2011 raid in Pakistan said the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email Wednesday, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to renew questions about whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not engage him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force said the shooting was understandable according to the orders the SEALS had.

"It wasn't unreasonable for the SEALs to shoot the individual who stuck his head out," said the former JAG, ret. Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," Dunlap said.

Dunlap adds that shooting bin Laden's fallen form was also reasonable in his legal opinion, to keep the terrorist from possibly blowing himself up or getting a weapon and shooting at the SEALs.

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as U.S. troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to the AP, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Answer: Who Made the Sculpture? [Video]

Answer: Who Made the Sculpture?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill. This week's challenge: who made the sculpture?

I thought this was going to be a difficult search, but the Challengers proved me wrong! Most of you solved this in 1 to 3 minutes, which is a great time!
Answer: Who Made the Sculpture?

The I way solved this problem was via Video search.

Since this is a kinetic sculpture, I figured that I wasn't the only one to take a video of this. I also thought that Image search might be a bit tricky. So, searching in Google Videos for [ flip animated sculpture airport ] leads quickly to an instantly recognizable video of "Cloud."

Once you know its name you can find other lovely videos. This second video turns out to have all kinds of information, including a link in the comments field to the Troika website, and from there you can answer all of the questions. If we jump to their web page about the sculpture: (extracted from that page...)

Troika [who are: Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer, Sebastien Noe ] was commissioned by Artwise Curators to create a signature piece for the entrance of the new British Airways luxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5.

In response, we created 'Cloud', a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually addressed by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture.

Flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. By audibly flipping between black and silver, the flip-dots create mesmerizing waves as they chase across the surface of Cloud. Reflecting its surrounding colours, the mechanical mass is transformed into an organic form that appears to come alive, shimmering and flirting with the onlookers that pass by.

The sculpture is located in Terminal 5 in the atrium hall that leads to the British Airways First Class Lounges.

The brief from British Airways was open and simple: create a signature piece that marks the entrance to the First Class Lounges and signifies the transition between the busy shopping floor and the calm and serenity of the lounges. Working from the idea of clouds and the contrast between the busy, hectic airport experience and the calm, luminous and ethereal world that we discover as we fly through this dense layer we came up with the basic metaphor, atmosphere and form of the installation.

...one of our inspirations came from the old electromagnetic flip-dots that were used in railway and airport signs from the mid 70s. Those signs, with their characteristic flicking noise that instantly invokes the idea of travel, represent to us a golden age of technology when analogue and digital started to merge...

More info: http://troika.uk.com/cloud

Search Lessons: I have to admit that there were many, many different ways to solve this problem.

Here are some of the successful queries that searchers used:

[ airport terminal sculpture aluminium ]
[ airport hanging electronic sculpture ]
[ mirror sculpture airport ]
[ airport sculpture flipping discs ]
[ airport sculpture silver discs ]

Clearly, having the search terms "airport" and "sculpture" in the query was important. How you described the kinetic aspect or the makeup of the discs (mirror, aluminum, flipping) all led to the same places.

But the lesson is clear: Use the information you have as a base, and then vary the descriptive terms as a way to zero in on what you're looking for. You KNOW that it's a sculpture in an airport?but you don't know how someone might write about the flipping discs. (Would they say "disks" or "circles" or "flipdots" or...)

And finally, kudos to everyone who listened to the sound and figured out it was British Air. I'm impressed. I was there, and it wasn't clear that *I* understood what they were saying! Great sleuthing!

Search on!

GOP convention gets rowdy in rift over Ron Paul

(AP) ? Feeling slighted, supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul's presidential bid chanted and booed Tuesday after Republican convention delegates adopted new rules that could impede insurgent candidates in the future.

The brief uproar was a rare unscripted moment in a carefully-choreographed convention that organizers hoped would showcase Republican harmony over nominee Mitt Romney. After the voice vote on the rules, the next speaker was quickly called in an attempt to limiting the amount of time Paul's supporters had to chant "Shame on you."

The rules are designed to limit the ability of insurgent presidential candidates to amass delegates to future Republican conventions. They will bind delegates to the outcome of presidential primaries and caucuses, preventing a candidate like Paul from pushing up their delegate counts at state conventions.

Paul delegates saw them as a power play by the Republican old guard.

"If you're trying to win a presidential campaign and put on a show, you shouldn't poke a sharp stick in the eye of conservative activists. That's what happened," said Colorado delegate Dudley Brown, who leads a gun rights organization back home.

Paul didn't win a single presidential primary but he got 190 delegate votes during the roll call of states that officially nominated Romney Tuesday. Romney got 2,061.

Paul briefly showed up on the convention floor, signing autographs and posing for photos. As he left the arena, he declined to say if he felt his delegates were being treated unfairly. "I'll let you know when it's over," he said.

Paul later said in a broadcast interview that he has no plans to endorse anyone for president.

"I am endorsing, you know, peace and prosperity and individual liberty, the Constitution, and I'm more intense on that than I am on the politics of it," Paul told Fox News.

Supporters of the new rules say voters expect the delegate count to reflect the outcome of state primaries and caucuses. The convention's rules committee made some late revisions to the new rules to placate party activists who weren't necessarily Paul backers.

The new rules originally allowed presidential candidates to choose which delegates would represent them at the convention ? taking that power from state parties. However, in a concession to local activists, party leaders agreed to remove the language. Instead, the rules say that delegates who support candidates other than the one they are obligated to support shall have their votes deemed "null and void."

"These rules will provide a strong governing framework for our convention and for our party," said former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, who headed the rules committee.

Mississippi Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour said delegates shouldn't let a fight over rules distract from the goal of beating Democratic President Barack Obama.

"None of us want a campaign overreaching," Barbour said. "We want bound delegates to live up to their commitment."

What You Need to Know About Hiring a Contractor

Nellie Akalp is the CEO of CorpNet.com, an online legal document filing service, where she helps entrepreneurs incorporate or form an LLC for their new businesses. Connect with Nellie on Twitter or visit her free resource center.

The contract workforce is fast becoming the new normal. Independent workers now make up 30% of the nation's workforce, according to the Freelancers Union. Online employment middleman Elance is also experiencing record growth, hitting more than $500 million in total freelancer earnings since 2007.

[More from Mashable: 10 Charming iPhone Cases for Kids]

The uncertainty in the economy undoubtedly drove many employers to hire freelance or contract workers in place of full-time employees. Along the way, many employers also quickly recognized the unique benefits of this approach, particularly that the cloud offers a vast pool of experts ready to pitch in at a moment?s notice.

However, this new workforce dynamic carries tricky legal implications for employers. There?s widespread misunderstanding about when an individual meets the legal requirements to be treated as a contractor versus a full-time employee. Here?s what to consider.

[More from Mashable: YouTube?s One-Click Video Enhancer Started With a Crazy Idea]

The Difference Between a Full-time Employee and a Contractor

Whether a worker is an independent contractor or employee generally boils down to how much control is exercised by the employer. In other words, you can't force someone to work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but you can ask they work 20 hours a week. This is true even for part-time or short-term help.

For a more formal approach, the Small Business Association outlines the differences between contractor and employee as follows:

  • An independent contractor: Operates under a business name, has his/her own employees; maintains a separate business checking account; advertises his/her business' services; invoices for work done; has more than one client; has own tools and sets own hours; keeps business records.
  • An employee: Performs duties dictated or controlled by others; is given training for work to be done; works for only one employer.

The Consequences of a Misclassification Error

Misclassification errors are common. A 2000 Labor Department study (the most recent available) found that 10% to 30% of companies, audited across nine states, misclassified some employees.

If you make a mistake in classifying an employee as an independent contractor, you can be forced to pay back taxes and penalties for federal and state income taxes, social security, medicare, and unemployment. In addition, you may be liable to reimburse the worker for any wages you should have paid them under the Fair Labor Standards Act, such as overtime and minimum wage. And in some cases, you may be required to provide employee benefits, such as health insurance.

How to Stay out of Trouble When Hiring Contractors

The IRS is keenly aware that businesses have been downsizing full-time employers to independent contractors over the past decade. As a result, they have been cracking down on the misclassification of contract workers. However, this fact shouldn?t deter you from taking advantage of the independent workforce. But you do need to be savvy when hiring independent contractors. Here?s what to remember.

  • Be sure to issue a Form 1099 for all independent contractors. This will be one of the first things an auditor will ask for.
  • Be careful about the amount of control and supervision you exert over a contractor. For example, make sure your contractors can set their own hours.
  • Hire independent contractors who have other clients, or who are actively marketing their services.
  • Don?t hire a contractor to perform the same service or duties as your company. For example, if you own a plumbing business, it?s perfectly reasonable to hire a contract web designer. But hiring a contract plumber could raise a red flag.

Samsung takes wraps off of Windows 8 desktop PCs

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Samsung will offer three different choices to people interested in buying a desktop computer equipped with a redesigned version of Windows going on sale this fall.

The personal computers previewed Tuesday by Samsung at a technology conference in Germany provided one of the first glimpses at the Windows 8 machines scheduled to hit the market on Oct. 26.

Windows 8's release has been widely anticipated because it's Microsoft's most dramatic overhaul of the operating system in at least 17 years. It's also coming out at a time when PC sales have been slowing as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to surf the Web.

Microsoft Corp. reprogrammed Windows 8 so it looks and works more like the touch-based systems on mobile devices. The three new Windows 8 desktops from Samsung will come with a high-definition touch display.

Several other major PC makers are expected to unveil their Windows 8 product lines in the upcoming weeks.

Samsung Electronics Co.'s Windows 8 computers for the desktop will have suggested prices of $749, $1,099 and $1,699 ? depending on the size of the storage drive, the amount of system memory and the size of display screen.

All three models will run on Intel Corp. processors.

Windows 8 can be controlled by swiping the applications on the display screen or by using a keyboard or computer mouse.

The touch controls will be available through a mosaic of tiles to show applications and services that can be continuously connected to the Internet.

When relying on a keyboard, users will usually switch to a part of the operating system that looks much like earlier versions of Windows. However, Microsoft left out the familiar "start" button typically found in the bottom left corner of the display screen.

In an effort to minimize the potential frustration caused by Windows 8's new look, Samsung built its own optional start button that be used to pull up a menu of applications. This feature won't be found on all Windows 8 PCs and laptops from other manufacturers.

Samsung is expected to introduce its Windows 8 line of laptop computers later this week.

Why You Need an Email Address Using Your Own Domain Name ...

Business owners benefit greatly by using an email address that contains the name of their business. Right away, you are seen as professional. If a business owner is not serious enough to register their own domain name and set up their own email address, how serious are they about their business? A personalised email address is also an easy way for existing clients and potential customers to remember the electronic mail address without having to look through their diaries and digital organisers. Today, it is possible to customise an online mail address as long as it follows the right format. Domain names can be included for fast recall and to achieve a more professional business email address. By choosing an appropriate domain name you can make your electronic mail address look more professional and make it easier to remember. For businesses, utilising your own domain name is strongly recommended rather than using a free email service. Besides looking unprofessional, another disadvantage of using a free email service is you risk getting spam messages in your inbox and you risk your email address being used by fraudulent people to send spam emails. Creating a unique email address containing your domain name can be done in two ways. First, set up dedicated hosting for your specific domain name. What this means is hosting the domain name on a particular server. Doing this will allow you to have your own portion of the disk space for each mail account. Another option is to set up email forwarding using your domain name. Use this option if you want to continue using your existing email account. With email forwarding, messages you receive from your hosted email account will be automatically sent to your current account. Web hosting companies normally offer packages that allow customers to create one or several email addresses using their domain name. You can do this on your own using the online control panel provided by your hosting company. The direct URL of the control panel should be provided to you by the company but if this is not possible, ask your web hosting company for help with setting up your email addresses. To create your specific email address via your web hosting company, you will need to enter a username, password and amount of space you want for your email account. Remember, though, that the space you specify here already forms part of the total disk space allocated to you in your hosting package. Hosting companies can allow multiple or even unlimited email accounts these days but if you?re in business, it would be beneficial to limit it to just two or three that you can use on a regular basis. For security reasons, it?s crucial not to share your password with anybody unless you have a trusted assistant who manages your emails and performs other administrative tasks on your behalf. You need to protect your inbox and even your website from various internet threats and attacks. By utilising a hosted domain name, you also have the freedom to change internet service providers (ISPs) without your clients being aware of it because you still retain your email address. Before setting up your account, an important point to keep in mind is that you need to register your domain name first. In this way, nobody else can claim it and you can freely use it when creating your unique email addresses.

Q. Choosing an Internet Hosting Package

Business Consultants Boost Practices ~ Business Consulting ...

Business consulting boosts revenue and businesses. Hiring them in this day and age has become indispensable to ensuring that a certain business succeeds. There are many consultants out there who can offer alternatives in situations other than their area of expertise. A business is sure to operate effectively when consultants like accountants and CPAs are hired for it. A consultant immediately recognizes the contours of the business by discovering its weaknesses and strengths.

There are many benefits you can reap by hiring a business consultant. Consultants keep an eye out for situations and circumstances that usually escape the notice of the regular staff. Consultants for businesses are usually very well-informed about the market situation and therefore, they easily enhance the experience of the staff while remaining oriented towards a positive result for the company they are helping. Most businesses, these days no longer possess the capability to analyze past failures and successes to base future plans upon.

A business consultant possesses considerable analytical skills that enable her to discover ideas and solutions for business growth and maintenance of a healthy relationship with customers and clients. This way, the businesses that consultants support usually stay ahead of the competition. Professional experts offer comprehensive information on different aspects of managing a business effectively. It's as if their presence and absence makes the difference between success and potential failure for a given business.

Business consulting gives business owners more time to think over core activities that are critical to the business's long term goals without having to think about faults in the system that could harm the enterprise if left unnoticed. Business owners are like captains of a ship while business consultants are the engineers discovering and immediately sealing minor cracks that may grow to sink the ship if left unattended. In addition to working on a short term basis, business consultants can act as a practice manager's long term aid. With the help of a business consultant, employee productivity and performance are dramatically improved.

Business consulting is an indispensable ingredient for new businesses. Two things are mainly required for a new business: a business plan and funds for its proper management. A plan that is thoroughly prepared will convince financial institutions and others to invest. Not only do professional business consultants greatly contribute to the development of such a plan, but they also free entrepreneurs from the stress associated with the process. Once the business is established, its owners or providers will want to increase sales or productivity. Business consulting services make possible the development of a strong marketing plan to increase sales. What go into a strong marketing plan are the analysis of growth, competitors and customer behavior.

Business consultants must be able to understand the business they will provide guidance for. This almost guarantees the success of that business. Therefore, business owners and practice managers must recognize their own objectives before consulting a business professional. That way, the consultant will know exactly what to focus on so that the company may be able to achieve those targets.

Obama says he wants to preserve Medicare

(AP) ? The Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work, President Barack Obama said Saturday in his radio and Internet address and in a new campaign ad.

The president used his weekly address to discuss the surging campaign issue, saying his goal is to strengthen Medicare and preserve the program for future generations. He made no mention of Republican rival Mitt Romney in the address.

But the new 30-second television ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.

"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," the new ad says.

Under a plan proposed by Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, starting in 2023 Medicare would be radically changed. New retirees would get a fixed amount of government money to pick either private health insurance or a federal plan modeled on Medicare. Ryan says that would keep the program solvent.

The Obama administration says the change could cost retirees as much as $6,400 a year.

Romney has accused Obama of cutting more than $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care law.

In the Republican's weekly address, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said the nation is being hurt by "the looting of the Treasury and 20 years of deficit spending."

Firemans Contractors, Inc. Eyes $1.7 Billion TIFIA ... - Franchising.com

Launch of Franchise Model Positions Firemans for Hyper Growth - $17 Billion in States Assistance for Infrastructure Projects - Potentially leveraging another $20-$30 billion in infrastructure investment making it the largest infrastructure loan program in U.S. history

DALLAS, Aug. 24, 2012 // PRNewswire // -- Firemans Contractors, Inc. (OTCBB: FRCN) (OTCQB: FRCN), a commercial contractor offering B2B commercial franchises and services in the pavement maintenance and parking lot maintenance industry, announced today that the company will leverage its newly launched franchise model to bid on $17 billion in TIFIA (Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act) projects; allowing the company to possibly secure an additional profit center potentially valued in the millions per annum.

"We seemed to have initiated our franchise model none too soon," stated Renee Gilmore, CEO of Firemans Contractors. "New government initiatives are creating more opportunities for mid-sized companies like ours to secure lucrative infrastructure contracts nationwide. Using our franchise model to promote rapid expansion, we could be more readily available anywhere in the country; and possibly more competitive than larger non-franchised operators."

Firemans Contractors expects that the new highway law known as 'MAP-21' will likely expand the TIFIA by $1.7 billion over the next 24 months. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, TIFIA, which provides credit assistance to states in the form of direct loans for infrastructure projects, will provide up to ten dollars in assistance for every dollar worth of seed money. Ray LaHood, the U.S. Transportation Secretary was noted as saying, "The $17 billion could potentially leverage another $20-$30 billion in infrastructure investment during the two-year life of MAP-21, making it the largest infrastructure loan program in U.S. history."

People close to the company suggest that this TIFIA action benefits the company in two dynamic ways. On one hand, Firemans Contractors has the ability to formidably compete with larger competitors insomuch that its smaller size and new franchise model allows for greater flexibility in bidding on contracts. On the other hand, larger companies may tend to commit their resources in seeking to be dominators of the near $30 billion governmental infrastructure build. This pursuit will further open up the mid market for Firemans Contractors to secure a greater number of the Fortune 500 companies the company already maintains as clients.

Mrs. Gilmore concluded, "The TIFIA expansion should prove to be a big win for us regardless of how the prospects of bidding for contracts evolve. If we get the opportunity to demonstrate our ability as a top rated mid-sized pavement and infrastructure maintenance company, then we've just contributed to the growth of shareholder value and confidence. If the TIFIA expansion leaves a gap in the marketplace, allowing us to more easily secure a foothold where the big guys have abandoned their post, we then again get the chance to increase the bottom line while increasing our client portfolio, growing shareholder confidence and building greater value. If both possibilities occur, then our franchise model will allow us to expand quickly, helping to ensure that Firemans Contractors continues to grow as a trusted resource in the pavement and infrastructure maintenance marketplace."

About TIFIA

The Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program provides Federal credit assistance in the form of direct loans, loan guarantees, and standby lines of credit to finance surface transportation projects of national and regional significance. TIFIA credit assistance provides improved access to capital markets, flexible repayment terms, and potentially more favorable interest rates than can be found in private capital markets for similar instruments. TIFIA can help advance qualified, large-scale projects that otherwise might be delayed or deferred because of size, complexity, or uncertainty over the timing of revenues. Many surface transportation projects - highway, transit, railroad, intermodal freight, and port access - are eligible for assistance. Each dollar of Federal funds can provide up to $10 in TIFIA credit assistance - and leverage $30 in transportation infrastructure investment. Pursuant to the recently enacted Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), DOT announced the availability of funding authorized in the amount of $1.75 billion ($750 million in Federal Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 funds and $1 billion in FY 2014 funds (and any funds that may be available from prior fiscal years)) to provide TIFIA credit assistance for eligible projects. Projects must meet statutorily specified eligibility criteria to receive credit assistance. The Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), published on July 31, 2012, outlines the process that applicants must follow.

The Importance Of Satellite tv Terminals | TechnologiesA-Z.blogspot ...

These days, communication plays such an natural part that many varieties of technology possess advanced so much in permitting people, companies, and other entities to easily talk on the fly, regardless of the medium

Satellite phone sales

. How this is possible is to use satellite terminals. A satellite television terminal is very important because it permits both stationary and mobile entities in order to continuously be connected to the Internet, therefore enabling them to communicate by utilizing powerful sources such as voice, text as well as video. All of this is possible, due to the fact satellite terminals allow visitors to connect to the Internet to send as well as download digital data promptly. So, the fact that just how potent this type of technologies is, you can understand why industrial sectors such as these involved in maritime and all other forms of transportation makes a lot use of that.

For example, yachts that take a trip the oceanic masses rely on this form of conversation heavily, with there being times in which an emergency can occur, such as one resulting from a storm, or perhaps because they needs to change path during their journey. Satellite terminals make sure that you could do this, as it offers these yachts the ability to continuously be connected to the Internet, no matter where they are in the world. One way in which satellite television terminals work is by supporting shipping folks to stay in connection with their families as well as other loved ones. Let's be honest, when you expended so many several weeks on the sea, it can grow to be very depressed, and the best way to keep your spirits lifted is simply by communicating with whoever has meaning in your own life.

Of course, the bandwidth speeds that you get largely depends on how big the satellite television dish you're using. For instance, if you use single.2 multi meter dish aerial, then you will usually be able to get speeds of up to Some megabits per second. The higher the speed, the better off you are at acquiring quality streaming, whether it is voice or video clip. So, regardless if you are in the delivery industry, or some other type of market that involves transportation, you will find that satellite television terminals will most likely play a very important role to keep your business working well satellite phone plans. In the end, the harder communication you are able to make with those that are near far ranges from your primary headquarters, the harder efficient the complete process have been around in ensuring that goods or individuals transport from one place to yet another in a safe and sound environment. Actually, when we realize just how much technology has gone in terms of conversation, one are not able to help yet to ponder how everyone was able to endure with the restricted technology utilized in the past.

Money Advance Loans & Payday Loans - Consumer Electronics Blog

GET Cash Until PAYDAY! . . . $100 OR A lot more . . . Quick.? The ads are on the radio, television, the World wide web, even in the mail. They refer to money advance loans or a payday loan ? which come at a quite high cost.

Check cashers, finance firms and other folks are producing small, short-term, high-rate loans that go by a selection of names: payday loans, money advance loans, check advance loans, post-dated check loans or deferred deposit check loans.

Normally, a borrower writes a personal check payable to the lender for the amount he or she wishes to borrow plus a fee. The company provides the borrower the amount of the check minus the fee. Fees charged for cash advance loans or a payday loan are normally a percentage of the face value of the check or a fee charged per amount borrowed ? say, for every $50 or $100 loaned. If you extend or ?roll-more than? the loan ? say for an additional two weeks ? you will spend the fees for each and every extension.

Below the Truth in Lending Act, the expense of payday loans ? like other kinds of credit ? should be disclosed. Among other information, you should receive, in writing, the finance charge (a dollar quantity) and the annual percentage rate or APR (the price of credit on a yearly basis). Loans secured by a private check ? such as a payday loan ? is really high-priced credit. Let?s say you write a personal check for $115 to borrow $100 for up to 14 days. The check casher or payday lender agrees to hold the check until your subsequent payday. At that time, depending on the certain program, the lender deposits the check, you redeem the check by paying the $115 in cash, or you roll-more than the check by paying a fee to extend the loan for one more two weeks.

In this example, the cost of the initial loan is a $15 finance charge and 391 percent APR. If you roll-over the loan 3 occasions, the finance charge would climb to $60 to borrow $100.Where to Complain If you feel your lender has violated the law, you may wish to contact the lender or loan servicer to register your issues.

Jurors to resume deliberations in Apple case

Associated Press

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 7:01 AM

Updated today at 7:01 AM

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Jurors were set to begin their second day of deliberations Thursday in a multibillion dollar patent infringement case pitting Apple against Samsung over the design of iPhones and iPads.

After a three-week federal trial in San Jose, a jury of seven men and two women picked from a pool of Silicon Valley residents will try to decide if Samsung Electronics Co. ripped off Apple Inc. designs or whether Apple wronged Samsung.

With so much money and market clout at stake, few experts were expecting a quick verdict. A decision likely won't come anytime soon, according to jury experts, attorneys and courtroom observers.

"This case has huge implications," said University of Notre Dame Law Professor Mark P. McKenna. "It could result in injunctions against both companies" involving the sales of products.

It took the judge more than two hours to read the 109 pages of instructions to the jury. As a verdict is reached, jurors must fill out a 20-page form that includes dozens of check-off boxes.

"The verdict form is crazy," said Karen Lisko, who runs a jury consulting company that specializes in patent trials. "It's incredibly complicated."

Jurors have several different smartphones and computer tablets in the jury room to help them determine which device is alleged to have violated what patent.

Apple argues that Samsung should pay the Cupertino-based company $2.5 billion for ripping off its iPhone and iPad technology when it marketed competing devices.

Attorneys for Samsung asked the jury to award it $399 million after claiming Apple used Samsung technology without proper compensation.

Lisko said it could take the jury an entire day just to devise a routine and system to sift through the facts and began actual deliberations.

"The first day is usually very messy," she said.

It took jurors more than a week to reach a verdict in another major patent case, Google v. Oracle. That San Francisco panel decided in May that Google did infringe Oracle's patents related to the Java computer language, but the panel awarded no damages after it couldn't come to a unanimous agreement on several other points.

During closing arguments Tuesday, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny said Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyer countered that the technology giant was simply and legally giving consumers what they want: Smart phones with big screens. They say they didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further claimed that Apple's claimed innovations were actually created by other companies.

The case went to the jury after last-minute talks between chief executives failed to resolve the dispute.

It's so simple, in fact, that you might wonder if this hook is baited strongly enough to keep audiences entertained for an entire film. Rest assured, action fans (and bicycle-lovers); not only is this smartly crafted action flick my pick for Summer's most pleasant surprise, but also, Premium Rush keeps pace with some of the genre's best movies.

Premium Rush picks up when Wilee (Gordon-Levitt) is assigned a "very important" delivery to Chinatown. What he doesn't realize, of course, is that the envelope contains some extremely sensitive material: a mysterious slip of paper that crooked cop Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon) is desperate to get his hands on. Luckily for the sender, Wilee is one of New York City's most skillful bike messengers. The crafty adrenaline junkie abhors the idea of working in an office and instead opts for a humble gig delivering packages via his bicycle, which he rides sans gears or brakes. That's about all the backstory we get on Wilee, and, frankly, it's all we need; commendably, the movie isn't muddled with too many insignificant details. To find out what makes Premium Rush stand out, just keep reading.

Gordon-Levitt, donning his safety helmet and boyish grin, is undeniably charming, as Wilee straddles the line between cocky and confident. That said, it's Shannon's Detective Monday who steals the show. Fans of Boardwalk Empire have seen Shannon's ability to portray a buttoned-up character with menace boiling below the surface, but here he loosens his crazy collar a little. His characterization of the cop with "impulse-control issues" evokes shades of Dennis Hopper's madman from Speed, and though it at times veers close to cartoonish, it's always entertaining. He and Gordon-Levitt have great chemistry as nemeses, and they're a far more interesting pair to watch than Wilee and his love interest (Dania Ramirez) in a subplot that feels flat.

The movie's many bike-riding sequences are also entertaining; they could have easily been boring, but they're spiced up with video-game-like graphics to illustrate routes that Wilee calculates in his head. While he projects the carnage that would result in turning left or right, we see the gory possible scenarios play out before he makes his split-second decisions. Wilee knows his modest two-wheeler can go where cars can't ? including oncoming traffic lanes, narrow alleys, under overpasses, and literally on top of parked cars ? and his intense jaunt through NYC is fast-paced and action-packed.

At 91 minutes, Premium Rush is a compact film, but it's impressive in its simplicity. There are no CGI creatures or overblown, costly sets to create its heart-pounding moments, just some old-fashioned creativity. While aspects of the plot may fall into campy territory, the film has real heart at the center. I underestimated Premium Rush, but packed with wit and originality, it's one of the Summer's most enjoyable movies.
