Grants That Are Available For Real Estate Investing : 31Night.com, A ...

Capital is one of the biggest requirements for real estate. So many people want to get started in real estate investing, but do not have the money to do so.

Sometimes it can seem like a Catch-22 kind of situation. You want to invest in real estate to make money, but you need money to invest in real estate. Many people wonder how they will ever be able to get started in real estate investing if they are unable to come up with the money to do so.

A grant can be the answer for you here.

You may have previously heard that there are grants available for people who want to start their own businesses. Naturally, this leads you to wonder if there are grants for real estate investing.

The simplest answer is that there are grants available for almost anything you want to do. That answer would translate to mean that there are indeed grants for real estate investing. The key to getting grants for real estate investing is first finding these grants.

If you have ever tried to search for grants for real estate investing, you might have noticed that the process is a lot like searching for college scholarships. There are plenty of grants for real estate investing out there, but many of them have very specific requirements. For example, the requirement for a grant might be phrased as something like ?Must be a descendant of George Washington living the state of New Mexico?. That example might be a little overboard, but you get the hint.

After looking at the requirements for so many different grants for real estate investing, you might think that there is no hope of ever getting a grant. Of course if you give up, you will never know if you can receive grants for real estate investing. You can succeed in getting grants for real estate investing if you don?t first try to get the grants.

To obtain grants for real estate investing, you must first know how to write a grant proposal. This is not a skill that is inherent. While you might be effective at other kinds of writing, grant proposals have their own format. This format must be followed if you want to receive grants for real estate investing. If you are not aware of the format for grant proposals, you can find information on the internet or through purchasing reference material from a bookstore. Alternatively, you can hire someone to write grants for you.

To improve the odds at receiving grants for real estate investing, you should apply for every grant you come across. If you think you meet the criteria in even the slightest way, it is worth a try to write the grant proposal.

In the case that you are paying someone to write your grant proposals, chances are you don?t want to spend the money to have more than ten grant proposals written for you. You can pay someone to write a few, and then use those as a guideline for drafting your own.

The key to finding grants for real estate investing is persistence. Continue trying until you have exhausted your resources, you may find that it pays off in the end.

Is Robert Wagner Responsible for Natalie Wood's Death?

It's been almost 30 years since Natalie Wood tragically and mysteriously drowned on Nov. 29, 1981, while on a vacation with her husband Robert Wagner and her Barnstorm costar Christopher Walken off the cost of California's Catalina Island. At the time, the death of the 43-year-old actress -- known for her roles in 1947's Miracle on 34th Street, 1955's Rebel Without a Cause and 1961's West Side Story -- was deemed an accident. But new evidence offered by the captain of the yacht Wood fled on the night she drowned has caused authorities to reopen the case.

The debate covered foreign policy, which has gotten little attention from the GOP candidates in recent weeks. During the debate Cain said President Barack Obama has been on the wrong side of nearly every situation in the Arab world and the United States has mishandled the uprisings in the region. (AP) ? Sharon Bialek's former boyfriend said Monday the then-couple spent an evening with Herman Cain in the 1990s. That countered the GOP presidential candidate's earlier statements that he never met the woman who has accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior more than a decade ago.

"Sharon indeed did meet and spend time with Mr. Cain," Victor Jay Zuckerman said.

In turn, Cain repeated his assertion that he had never met his accuser.

"I'm standing by what I have said," Cain said in Green Bay, Wis.

Hours after Zuckerman stepped forward to give his account, Cain's wife ? Gloria ? was defending her husband in a television interview as turmoil over allegations of sexual impropriety while he led the National Restaurant Association stretched into a third week.

Cain, trying to get back to a business-as-usual campaign schedule, gave an interview to the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel but stumbled through a question on Libya. The video ricocheted around the Internet.

After saying he did not agree with President Barack Obama's handing of the revolt against longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, Cain said he would have taken similar steps to Obama. But he hesitated before answering.

"I got to go back, see, got all this stuff twirling around in my head," Cain said, shifting in his chair and crossing his legs during a 10-second silence.

Asked later about the moment, Cain dismissed it and told reporters: "I paused so I could gather my thoughts." An aide later said Cain hadn't had enough sleep.

It was another distraction for the candidate just as he was looking to get beyond questions about his behavior while he led the restaurant association more than a decade ago. The allegations have dogged his campaign for the GOP nomination and sent his poll numbers slipping seven weeks before the leadoff caucuses in Iowa.

Cain has denied wrongdoing and vowed to stay in the presidential race.

Even so, he has been unable to put the controversy behind him.

Zuckerman, a Louisiana pediatrician, corroborated some of Bialek's story ? with attorney Gloria Allred at his side ? just as the firestorm around Cain seemed to be subsiding since the first disclosures on Oct. 30 rocked Cain's campaign. There hadn't been any new information disclosed in the past week about Cain or the accusations, and plans for a joint news conference by his accusers seemed increasingly unlikely.

A week ago, Cain said he didn't remember Bialek and had never seen her until she went public with allegations that Cain groped her when she sought his help getting a job after the trade group he led had fired her.

"I saw Ms. Allred and her client yesterday in that news conference for the very first time," Cain said after that event. "As I sat in my hotel room with a couple of my staff members, as they got to the microphone, my first response in my mind and reaction was, I don't even know who this woman is. Secondly, I didn't recognize the name at all."

Later, Cain added: "I don't even know who this woman is. I tried to remember if I recognized her and I didn't."

But, on Monday, Zuckerman echoed Bialek's account of the two of them meeting Cain ? and spending the evening with him ? in Chicago in 1997 at the National Restaurant Association convention. He said that Cain then invited them to an after-dinner party in a hotel suite.

"At that party, Mr. Cain engaged both of us in conversation," Zuckerman said.

Later that year, Zuckerman said, Bialek told him that Cain inappropriately touched her when, at Zuckerman's suggestion, she met him in Washington to seek employment help.

"When she returned, she was upset," Zuckerman said. "She said that something had happened and that Mr. Cain had touched her in an inappropriate manner. She said she handled it and didn't want to talk about it any further."

On Monday, Cain's team pointed to his earlier statement that he does not remember Bialek.

Cain attorney Lin Wood, in an interview with The Associated Press, said Cain met with a large number of people while leading the National Restaurant Association. And if someone remembers meeting Cain, Wood said, it is possible that Cain would not remember them.

"He doesn't recall Ms. Bialek," Wood said. "But what he does know is that he has never done such a thing as she alleges to any person."

At least three other women have claimed that Cain engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct toward them in the late 1990s when he ran the restaurant industry's Washington-based trade association.

Allred, who represents Bialek, called on Cain to acknowledge that he had met his accuser. She would not say whether other Cain accusers have contacted her, saying only that she represents only Bialek.

As Allred sought to poke holes in Cain's story, the candidate was campaigning in Wisconsin. He attended a private fundraising event and, later, was appearing for a tailgate party at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. He was heading to Iowa on Tuesday to campaign.

Meanwhile, his wife, Gloria Cain, who has been all but absent on the campaign trail this year, was appearing in a television interview set to air Monday night.

"I'm thinking he would have to have a split personality to do the things that were said," she said in excerpts of the Fox News Channel interview that were released Sunday.

She said she cannot believe the claims.

"To hear such graphic allegations and know that that would have been something that was totally disrespectful of her as a woman and I know that's not the person he is," Gloria Cain said. "He totally respects women."

Ice Cream Sandwich source code released, sync pending go-ahead from AOSP

If you're chomping at the bit waiting to get your hands on a nice cool piece of Android 4.0, your wait may soon be over. Pending a final go-ahead from the Android Open Source Project, you'll be able to sync the now available Ice Cream Sandwich source code. Due to the "large push" (presumably because of all the changes), the roll out is going to take some time to complete -- project members will give the final word when things are good to go. If you try to sync prematurely, be forewarned that you'll get an incomplete copy that will be useless. The available flavor is 4.0.1 which will be the version to ship on the Galaxy Nexus, the first ICS device. This release also includes "the full history of the Android Code," signaling the first time Honeycomb source has seen daylight. Can't wait for a taste? The extremely impatient can hit that coverage link below, but we prefer our frozen treats to be properly chilled before consumption.

3 French aid workers freed in Yemen

(AP) ? Three French aid workers held hostage by al-Qaida militants in Yemen have been freed with the help of the sultan of Oman after nearly six months in captivity, the French president's office said Monday.

Kidnappers linked to al-Qaida's offshoot in the region had demanded a $12 million in exchange for the three, and had threatened to kill the hostages if ransom wasn't paid imminently, according to Yemeni officials.

A Yemeni mediator said the Omani government and a Yemeni businessman paid a ransom, though he gave no figure and the ransom couldn't immediately be confirmed.

The hostage ordeal came amid an uprising against the 30-year reign of President Ali Abdullah Saleh that has unraveled security in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country. Al-Qaida-linked militants have taken control of entire towns in the country's restive south.

The aid group Triangle Generation Humanitaire said the workers were in good health. But the circumstances of their release remained murky.

The senior Yemeni tribal mediator said Oman and Yemeni tribesmen negotiated the release, and that the hostages were handed over to mediators one by one. He said a helicopter carried the hostages from the southern Yemeni city of Shabwa ? a hotbed of Islamic militants ? to Oman late Sunday.

The mediator spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. He didn't give further details.

Authorities in Oman did not comment on the release or its government's role. Oman never made a public comment about its mediation role in freeing three U.S. hikers detained in Iran.

French authorities insist the government doesn't pay ransoms. French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office issued a statement announcing the release early Monday, but provided no details of what happened.

Sarkozy "warmly thanks the sultan of Oman and the Oman authorities for their decisive help, as well as all those who contributed to this happy outcome," the statement said, without elaborating.

The two women and one man from Triangle Generation Humanitaire were abducted May 28 in eastern Yemen's Hadramawt province, which is home to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

"We know they are in good physical shape," a director of the group, Patrick Verbruggen, told The Associated Press. "We are sharing a moment of happiness."

He said he had no details about how they were released, whether a ransom was paid, or when they would return to France.

The aid group, based in Lyon, France, pulled out its expatriate employees from Yemen after the kidnapping, though Yemeni employees remain. The group works on projects to improve water supplies and farming infrastructure.

Abdu al-Janadi, a Yemeni government spokesman, told reporters on Sunday the hostages were held by al-Qaida militants in Shabwa and that the abductors threatened to kill the hostages if the Yemeni government didn't pay a ransom by the end of the week.

Kidnappings are common in Yemen, where tribesmen use abductions to try to force concessions from the government, such as the release of fellow tribesmen in prison.

Yemeni government forces and allied tribesmen killed 10 militants in attacks around the country Sunday, security officials said. A visiting U.N. envoy met with Saleh to push for a solution to the country's political crisis.

Facebook SlingPlayer revealed, proves you can't escape social networking (video)

Add another future platform for SlingPlayer to the pile, as the company recently showed off this quick demo of streaming video through Facebook. While the old Sling.com streaming still works just fine, this one adds some new social features to the mix. That will let viewers share the shows and what they enjoy watching easily while not-so-coincidentally making sure their friends know they're watching TV via Slingbox. There's no word on when this will actually hit the OpenGraph'd streets, but so far it's already in line behind players we've seen demonstrated but not yet released for Boxee and Google TV. Press play to check out the video and think back to a world where no one knew you were watching Law & Order for the eighth time today.

[Thanks for the video, Dave Zatz]

Report says Chinese police shoot 3 soldiers dead

(AP) ? Chinese media say police in the northeast shot and killed three soldiers who fled their barracks with an assault rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Few details were available and almost all reports of the incident had been removed from official websites by Thursday with only their headlines remaining, a sign of China's extreme sensitivity over military misconduct.

However, China Radio International reported on its English-language site that police killed three soldiers and captured another one alive after cornering them in the city of Yingkou in Liaoning province on Wednesday. An unidentified number of police officers also were injured in the capture.

CRI said the four went absent without leave from their barracks in neighboring Jilin province early Wednesday morning and had taken a rifle and 795 rounds. No motive was given for their going AWOL, although it said area banks and jewelry stores were ordered to be on high alert against attempted robberies.

Calls to police in Jilin and Yingkou rang unanswered and people answering phones at local government offices said they had no information about the incident.

The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said the soldiers may have fled because of a recent order for the early discharge of soldiers with poor disciplinary records or who had entered service before turning 18 in violation of regulations. It said at least two of those involved were underage, and may have feared that their early discharges would lead to discrimination in future job searches.

The center said family members of the four, identified as Lin Penghan, Yang Fan, Li Xinxin and Zhang Xiyan, had been taken from their homes by authorities.

The incident comes amid the annual winter recruitment drive for the 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army, the world's largest standing military, which has sought to improve the quality of its manpower by expanding enrollment among university graduates and better educated city dwellers.

Discipline is not generally considered a major problem in the PLA, although there have been occasional violent protests among demobilized soldiers complaining over the lack of benefits and job prospects.

Search is on for source of mystery radiation

Trace amounts of the radioactive material iodine-131 have been detected across Europe over the past two weeks, according to nuclear officials there. The source of this radiation-spewing material is unknown.

Iodine-131 is a byproduct of the type of nuclear fission reactions that occur in reactors and nuclear weapons; it emits radiation that can cause cancer when absorbed in high enough doses. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the levels of iodine-131 that have been detected in several locations across Europe are abnormally high, but not high enough to pose a public health risk, Reuters reported Friday.

Austria's Environment Ministry said the small levels of radioactive iodine it detected would expose the population to a radiation dose equal to just one-40,000th of the dose received in a trans-Atlantic flight.

Nonetheless, the IAEA is on the hunt for the source of this free-flying nuclear fission product, which the agency does not believe to be a remnant of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, earlier this year. Iodine-131 decays quickly, with a half-life of just eight days.

The uptick in radioactive iodine was first detected in late October by the Czech Republic's Office of Nuclear Safety, and has since been measured elsewhere, the IAEA said.

Paddy Regan, a professor of nuclear physics at Britain's University of Surrey, told Reuters that the iodine may have leaked from a radiopharmaceuticals manufacturing plant. Alternatively, it may be leaking from a hospital, he said, as these often keep supplies of iodine in store.

Massimo Sepielli, head of the nuclear fission unit at Italy's national alternative energy body ENEA, suggested several other possibilities: "It could be coming from the transporting of (nuclear) material, it could come from a hospital ... it could even come from a nuclear submarine, even if it's a more complicated possibility ... but you can't rule that out."

The Stanza Ereader is Back, Now with iOS 5 Compatibility [Updates]

The Stanza Ereader is Back, Now with iOS 5 Compatibility Stanza was one of the first ereader apps available on the iPhone, and it quickly gained popularity due to its support for multiple file formats and customization options. But after Amazon bought Stanza, updates became less frequent. The app was incompatible with iOS 5, and many feared that Amazon would never fix it. Today, however, Amazon has released an update that brings iOS5 compatibility to the app so Stanza fans can get back to reading on their iOS devices (unless they are still running iOS 4, as there are reports that this update is only compatible with iOS 5).

(AP) ? Heavy D, the self-proclaimed "overweight lover" of hip-hop who became one of rap's top hit-makers with wit, humor and a positive vibe, has died. He was 44. Andrew Weitz of William Morris Endeavor Entertainment confirmed the rapper's death in Los Angeles in an email Tuesday, without giving a cause of death or saying where he died. Weitz declined to provide further details on Heavy D's death.

Dwight Arrington Myers, the rapper known as Heavy D of Heavy D and the Boyz, and his crew released their debut album "Living Large" in 1987. Their hits included "Now That We Found Love," ''Who's the Man" and "Somebody For Me."

The New York-born rapper was one of the genre's most integral stars in the last 1980s and early 1990s, as it relied on new voices and star power to fuel its phenomenal growth in the mainstream.

The deep-voiced rapper's earliest hit, "The Overweight Lover's in the House," played up his hefty frame. But while that nickname would stick, his weight did not become part of his shtick, like the Fat Boys. What drew people to his music was his singular style, which celebrated an easygoing, party vibe ? sometimes humorous, sometimes inspiring and almost always positive.

In the mid-1990s, Heavy D became president of Uptown Records, the label that released most of his albums and was also the home to acts like Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. He also created the theme songs for sketch comedy shows "In Living Color" and "MADtv" and acted on the TV shows "Boston Public" and "The Tracy Morgan Show," as well as in the films "Life" and "Step Up.

Combined with the fusion of the "New Jack Swing" musical style, Heavy D was a constant presence on the charts, and also a go-to figure for several performers. He collaborated with such artists as Michael Jackson on the 1991 single "Jam" and the 1997 duet "Keep It Coming" with B.B. King.

His latest album, "Love Opus," was released in September, and he performed a medley of his past hits at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards last month.

He also had a cameo appearance in the new movie "Tower Heist," starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller.

Mendocino County Marijuana Program At Risk After DEA Raids ...

This article comes to us courtesy of California Watch.

By Michael Montgomery

On Oct. 13, heavily armed Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided Northstone Organics, a medical marijuana cooperative in Mendocino County. The farm is part of a county-wide program that remains the only effort in California to impose local controls on marijuana production. The program has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees for the sheriff's department and has become a model for other counties looking to bring order to the medical marijuana industry.

The Center for Investigative Reporting and KQED examined Mendocino's experiment in legalizing medical marijuana cultivation in this summer's PBS FRONTLINE episode "The Pot Republic" and has obtained exclusive access to footage from the Oct. 13 raid.

This reporting is part of an ongoing investigation by CIR, FRONTLINE and KQED.

Stewart wins at Texas to cut gap to 3 on Edwards (AP)

FORT WORTH, Texas ? When Tony Stewart stood up after his postrace interview, a full-length boxing robe was draped over his shoulders.

Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage then put his hands on the race winner's shoulders and bounced along behind Stewart out of the room.

While the "Texas Title Fight" fully lived up to its billing with the top two contenders finishing 1-2 and Carl Edwards having his points lead trimmed to three, there are still two rounds left in what has become quite a fight for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.

"Definitely, we wanted to beat Tony and pad that lead a little bit," Edwards said. "At the end of the day, we can walk out of here with our heads up. We're still the points leader. ... It's going to be a great battle."

But Stewart has plenty of momentum on his side after racing to his second consecutive victory, and winning for the fourth time in eight Chase races. He led 173 of 334 laps and winning the fastest of 22 Cup races at Texas (152.705 mph).

"Tony raced me harder than he's ever raced me," said Kasey Kahne, who finished third.

No need for any more verbal jabs by Stewart, who after winning at Martinsville a week earlier said Edwards "better be worried" the last three weeks of the season.

"I'm pretty sure what we did on the race track said everything we needed to tell him today. I don't know how you top that," Stewart said. "The funny thing, I don't feel like I have to say anything. I feel like I've already got it done."

The Chase goes next week to Phoenix, where the track has been reconfigured and resurfaced since Stewart was seventh and Edwards 28th there in February in the second race this season, and then to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the finale. Edwards won both of those races at the end of last season.

Edwards is the points leader for the fifth week in a row, and the Roush Fenway driver has been in the No. 1 spot after 20 of 34 races.

"We're very fortunate to have led the points for as long as we have. ... I have a certain comfort level with it. We've watched the guys make runs and fall away," Edwards said. "I don't underestimate (Stewart) for a second. I know how good they are. But we're going to be good as well."

Edwards' only win this season came eight months ago at Las Vegas, where Stewart was the runner-up. But Edwards has 17 top-five finishes, and his lowest in the chase was 11th at Talladega.

Stewart didn't even have a win this season before opening the 10-race Chase with victories at Chicagoland and New Hampshire. Before now doing it twice in less than two months, Stewart hadn't won consecutive races since July 2007.

His focus is set on winning a third Cup championship, and becoming the first person not named Jimmie Johnson to win the title since 2005 ? when Stewart won while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing before becoming a driver-owner.

"I still stand firm that we're not counting on (Edwards) to make mistakes," Stewart said. "We're controlling our destiny. Today is a perfect example of that. We're worried about what we're doing. ... It's theirs to lose now. But I don't know if they have a choice now."

With the win at Texas, where Edwards is the only three-time Cup winner, Stewart cut the points margin from eight to three.

While really down to Edwards vs. Stewart, only three of 12 drivers who made the Chase have been mathematically eliminated from contention. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Ryan Newman, who drives a car owned by Stewart, were knocked out Sunday.

Busch had to watch his No. 18 Toyota going around the track from atop the pit box. He was parked by NASCAR ? a rarely used penalty he couldn't appeal ? for the Cup and Nationwide races after deliberating wrecking championship contender Ron Hornaday Jr. in the Truck Series race Friday night at the track. Busch issued an apology Saturday night and said he understood why he was penalized.

Michael McDowell drove the Joe Gibbs-owned car and finished 33rd, three laps behind the leaders.

Five-time champion Johnson moved closer to the end of his unprecedented championship run when he finished 14th. He remained sixth in points, 55 back.

Stewart and Edwards were greeted at Texas with lockers complete with boxing gloves and robes, a tale of the tape and banners declaring a "Texas Title Fight" matching Cousin Carl vs. Smoke. Another banner hung near Victory lane featuring boxing promoter Don King and Gossage.

They were in close vicinity of each other throughout the race after starting nose-to-tail. Stewart qualified fifth and Edwards seventh.

After 85 laps, before the second round of green-flag pit stops before any cautions, Matt Kenseth was leading with Edwards and Stewart running 2-3, though there was a 4-second gap between them.

After 200 laps, when Stewart was leading and Edwards was running sixth ? the farthest they were separated all day ? they were even in points.

Stewart went in front of Edwards to stay on a restart with 60 laps to go after the second caution in a matter of laps, shooting by him out of Turn 2 onto the backstretch. On the caution before that, Edwards had taken the lead out of the pits.

The last lead change of the race came with five laps left when Jeff Burton, trying to match Edwards as a three-time Cup winner at Texas, ran out of fuel. Burton had been the only car not to make a late stop, and was trying to stretch his last tank to the end.

Greenpeace protests SAfrican coal power station (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? Greenpeace activists climbed a construction crane at a coal-fired power station under construction east of Johannesburg and planned to spend the night there to protest what they call South Africa's unnecessary dependence on coal, the environmental group said Monday.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Fiona Musana said the protest started early Monday with activists chaining themselves to the gates of the construction site. Security guards later cut the chain. Musana added that six activists climbed a crane at the site where they plan to spend the night.

"Construction of this place should stop now," Musana said.

Coal electricity plants are the main source of greenhouse gas emissions by South Africa, which hosts climate change talks starting later this month in its coastal city of Durban. Greenpeace said South Africa should be moving faster away from coal and invest heavily in solar and wind power.

"When the world descends on Durban at the end of this month and people everywhere hope that progress can be made in reaching a climate saving deal, the South African government has a chance to lead, a chance of making history as a champion for the climate, for justice and the planet," Greenpeace's Melita Steele said in a statement Monday. "It should not squander that chance by letting a government owned utility like Eskom make a mockery of the talks."

Eskom, the state-owned electricity company, says it needs Kusile, expected to be completed in 2016, and Medupi, a coal plant scheduled for completion in 2015, because of rising electricity demand. Eskom also has renewable projects planned.

Last month, the World Bank approved $250 million in funding for to help Eskom build solar power and wind power plants. Last year, the World Bank approved a $3.75-billion loan to Eskom for the Medupi coal power station.

China's Ai Weiwei: hit with $2.4 million tax bill, now illegal fundraising?

Since Chinese authorities slapped dissident Ai Weiwei with a $2.4 million tax bill, donations have poured in from thousands of supporters. Now, China may charge Weiwei with illegal fundraising.

An official Chinese newspaper suggested Monday that prominent dissident artist Ai Weiwei might be guilty of illegal fundraising, as money poured in to help him pay a $2.4 million tax bill due later this week.

Individual supporters had come up with $840,000 by early afternoon Monday, Mr. Ai announced on his Twitter account. He and his supporters believe the charge of tax evasion the police brought is only cover for political persecution.

The money was rolling in Monday, despite the forced closure last Friday night of Ai?s account on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like site freely accessible to anyone on the Chinese Internet. The company, like all Internet firms here, has come under increasing government pressure, and was one of more than 30 firms that promised at a recent meeting to prevent the spread of ?harmful information? on its site, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Ai is now communicating via Twitter and Google+, neither of which are accessible in China without special censorship-evading software.

Donors were sending money by bank and post office transfer, through an Internet payment mechanism, and delivering it in person to Ai?s Beijing studio. Some had folded bills into paper airplanes and flown them over his studio wall, supporters said.

The Global Times, a daily newspaper owned by the ruling Communist party, said in its English language edition Monday that ?this could be an example of illegal fund raising.?

Ai insisted in a Google+ post Monday that he ?will definitely return every penny? he has been loaned and warned lenders that their loans ?will not bear any interest.??

New nanotube battery technology leads to blisteringly fast recharges, improved safety features

Some day, your restroom break may be enough time to charge your [insert nifty gadget here] halfway. A group of researchers at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory has discovered that nanotubes composed of titanium dioxide can switch their phase as a battery is cycled, gradually boosting their operational capacity. The upshot: laboratory tests showed that new batteries produced with this material could be rejuvenated to 50 percent of their maximum charge in less than 30 seconds. This was accomplished by replacing conventional graphite anodes with titanium nanotube andodes. Following the experiment, lead researcher Tijana Rajh and her colleagues noted that as the battery cycled through several charges and discharges, its internal structure began to orient itself in a way that dramatically improved the battery's performance. Furthermore, using anodes composed of titanium dioxide instead of graphite could improve the reliability and safety of lithium-ion batteries and help avoid scenarios in which the lithium can deposit on the graphite anodes, causing a dangerous chain reaction known as "thermal runaway." Copious amounts of related technobabble can be found in the links below, and there's a video just past the break, too.

Singer Andy Williams has bladder cancer - Pop2it - Zap2it

andy-williams-getty.jpgAndy Williams, the singer perhaps best known for his version of the Academy Award-winning song "Moon River" and his self-titled television program, revealed to the audience at his Christmas show Saturday night (Nov. 5) in Branson, MO that he has bladder cancer.

"I do have cancer of the bladder. But that is no longer a death sentence. People with cancer are getting through this thing. They're kicking it, and they're winning more and more every year. And I'm going to be one of them," says Williams.

Williams' appearance at the Saturday show was a a surprise, as he had previously missed planned performances this fall with an undisclosed medical condition. The theater also announced recently that Williams would likely miss his holiday schedule as well.

At the show, he sang "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" and said he would be back next fall to celebrate.

"I'm going to do the shows I've planned to do," says Williams.

Let's hope he beats the cancer and can perform like he wants to.

Instant view: Greek PM Papandreou wins confidence vote (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou won a parliamentary confidence vote on Saturday, avoiding snap elections which would have torpedoed Greece's bailout deal and inflamed the euro zone's economic crisis.

COMMENTS:

ENRIQUE ALVAREZ, LATIN AMERICA STRATEGIST AT IDEAGLOBAL, NEW YORK

"It looks like they are going to put together a unity government. Whoever takes the front in the unity government is still going to pursue the bailout package. I don't think that is going to change very much.

"Before the referendum you had very split opinions as to what course to pursue, but I think that has changed now and most of the Greek political parties are very aware and fearful of unplugging the plug on the euro membership.

"So I think that, looking forward, that unity government is going to go on course and going to try to apply the recipes that were prescribed for the second bailout.

"Now the ball is off to Italy. The problem is not going to be Greece, the problem will be Italy because Italian rates at the 10-year level have been above 6 percent. That's where the market focus has migrated to already and that's where the real risk is now."

MICHAEL YOSHIKAMI, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF INVESTMENT STRATEGIST AT YCMNET ADVISORS IN WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA

"I'm surprised the margin was as big as it was. It certainly is a positive for the bailout and now we'll see if there was a negotiated resignation and a new leadership some time soon, though that is not as quite a big a point anymore. No matter who's in power Greece is going to have to accept the settlement offer. But (Papandreou's) gamble backfired and he probably wants to turn the page. France and Germany get credit for drawing a line in the sand and saying they are not going to renegotiate the deal. Markets are going to react positively to that."

MICHAEL WOOLFOLK, SENIOR CURRENCY STRATEGIST, BNY MELLON, NEW YORK

"We could see a small relief rally from this but I would not expect it to be too large. There's still questions about whether people will live with these austerity measures. More broadly, the issue of whether or not the euro zone will be a political or economic union is still being put off. If the latter, membership is a privilege, not a right."

PETER BEUTEL, president, Cameron Hanover, energy trading consultants, New Canaan, Connecticut

"With the confidence vote given to the Papandreou government, we end the week on new possibilities rather than a can of worms when the oil market comes back on Monday. We start next week on a position of strength, whether Greece has a unity government or a new person in charge. Markets will build on this sliver of strength although they are still a long way from getting out of the woods. But the confidence vote ends the week on a positive note."

PETER KENNY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT KNIGHT CAPITAL IN JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY:

"I think it will definitely add inertia to the attempts to get Greece back on track in terms of implementing the kind of austerity that will be essential for this thing to work. It will help (markets) on Monday but like everything else involving the euro zone it is a series of incremental steps."

JURGEN ODENIUS, PRINCIPAL OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC AND INVESTMENT STRATEGY AT PRUDENTIAL FIXED INCOME, NEWARK

"Even though he has won the vote, he engaged in a game of brinkmanship. He proposed a referendum and then had to retract it and is barely managing to produce majorities in parliament. All that means to me is that his days in power are numbered. There is a lack of legitimacy at this point even though he won the vote. At least, though, the worst has been avoided, where no new government was formed and Greece gets pushed into default. So at least we're back to where we were before. So at the margin, it's positive. But I don't think the market will rally too much on this. Don't expect a huge relief rally."

THOMAS ROTH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IN U.S. GOVERNMENT BOND TRADING, MITSUBISHI UFJ SECURITIES USA, NEW YORK

"It takes the risk off the table. It takes away the risk of a referendum (on the euro zone bailout) or renegotiating new terms. Net-net it's a 'risk-on' event. How much you can rally on this? It may be temporary at best. You have still have a lot of risks like Italy. We just don't know. We have (Treasuries) supply next week so that's a factor. We could see Treasuries trade off a little. All in all, it's a slight positive for stocks and a slight negative for bonds."

Marquez suspension extended to 3 games

updated 7:50 p.m. ET Nov. 3, 2011

NEW YORK - Major League Soccer has extended the suspension of New York Red Bulls defender Rafael Marquez to three games.

Marquez, the Mexican national team captain, was given a red card Sunday for firing a ball at the Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan following a playoff game.

The red card carried an automatic one-game suspension and $250 fine, and MLS's disciplinary added an additional two matches and $2,000. The committee said "Marquez's conduct was violent and aggressive and put the league in disrepute." It said Marquez attempted to head butt and punch Adam Cristman, that he struck the Galaxy forward and Marquez simulated he had been struck in the face.

While the MLS Players Union appealed, MLS Commissioner Don Garber upheld the penalty Thursday. Any suspension not served this year would carry to next season.

In addition, fines of undisclosed amounts were assessed to Cristman and Red Bulls midfielder Teemu Tainio. The league cited them for improper conduct and escalating the incident.

Marquez was also left off Mexico's squad for a friendly match against Serbia next week. The 32-year-old Marquez, who led Mexico at the 2010 World Cup, joins Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela in missing out on a place in the 20-man list.

What Is Alzheimer's Disease? A Visual Primer

Features | Mind & Brain

The devastating brain disease slowly destroys memory and identity. Gain a better understanding through a detailed tour presented by our partners, TheVisualMD

As many as 35 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia among adults over 60 years of age. That figure could reach 115 million by 2050, concludes the nonprofit Alzheimer's Disease International.?In the U.S., about 5 percent of adults 65 to 74 have Alzheimer's, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may have it, according to figures of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.?

The predominant explanation for how Alzheimer's disease develops and ravages the brain are explained at a new site built by TheVisualMD. We present a few examples of the stunning graphics used on the site below. You can read the complete e-book at TheVisualMD landing page here.

Alzheimer's: A Microscopic View

Neurons and the connections they make with one another, called synapses, are the keys to the brain's functions.

?

?In Alzheimer's disease, an abnormal protein called amyloid beta begins to appear on the neurons, forming plaques and compromising brain activity.

?

?Another protein implicated in Alzheimer's is the tau protein:

?Besides age, other risk factors include family history, previous brain trauma, heart disease and gender (the prevalence rate for women over 70 is 16 percent, compared with men at 11 percent).

Despite much research, no drug exists to cure the disease or modify its relentless progression toward cognitive decline, although some drugs may lessen symptoms for a limited period. Some simple steps may help cut your chances of getting the disease or slow it down, such as pursuing an active life, eating right and staying socially engaged.
