A big week in San Diego military history

Our weekly trip through San Diego history features baseball, medical and naval firsts. Plus your chance to win a book in the U-T San Diego trivia contest.

April 1: In 1952 Miramar was commissioned as a Naval Air Station in the midst of the Korean War.

April 2: In 1955 the first Sharp Hospital ? the Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital ? is dedicated in Kearny Mesa. Sharp was an Army Air Corps lieutenant in December 1944 when he was killed while returning from a mission in Germany.

April 3: In 2007 the Padres win their season opener in a 7-0 laugher against the Giants in San Francisco, beating former manager Bruce Bochy. Bochy laughed last.

April 4: In 1999 the Padres lose 8-2 to the Colorado Rockies in Monterrey, Mexico, the first major league opening game played outside the United States and Canada.

April 5: In 1916 future Academy Award-winning actor Gregory Peck is born Eldred Gregory Peck in La Jolla. He was nominated five times for Best Actor and won once for his role in "To Kill a Mockingbird."

April 6: In 1917 the U.S. entered World War I and the Organ Pavilion in Balboa park began starting concerts with "America" and ending them with "The Star Spangled Banner." The music endures.

April 7: In 1888 the Sweetwater Dam was completed and in 2006 it was recognized as a national historic landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
