President Barack Obama arrived in Ireland to began a weeklong European courtship, seeking to rekindle relations with a continent that has at times felt snubbed under his leadership.
One of the major themes of Mr. Obama's trip?the political movements in the Middle East and North Africa?underscores how the U.S. believes it can gain from having a stronger ally in Europe. Mr. Obama has increasingly stressed the financial benefit of multilateralism for the U.S. His much-criticized strategy of leading from behind allowed Europe to take the lead, and a share of the financial burden, in a multinational coalition to enforce a no-fly zone in Libya.
