 Sent: 16 June 2011  andrews@mail.law.cuny.edu  *_Regional Program Coordinator - Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa   _*  The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is recruiting a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of Regional Program Officer - Africa. IGLHRC's goal is to help build strong and diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights movements worldwide.  Toward this end, the Regional Program Coordinator - Africa will 1) strengthen capacity for human rights documentation among LGBT activists in Africa and (2) engage in and support advocacy at regional and global forums.  The Regional Program Coordinator - Africa will be IGLHRC's in-house expert on LGBT rights issues in Africa, with a particular focus on a limited number of focus countries. This is a full-time position to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa.   *Key Responsibilities*  . Maintains knowledge about progress toward LGBT rights and a strong set of relationships with local LGBT activists in at least 5 countries in the region.  . Strengthens the capacity of LGBT African activists in these countries to conduct effective human rights documentation in order to promote evidence-based advocacy.  Initiatives include developing curricula, coordinating meetings, making presentations, drafting material, and providing support to activists and organizations.  . Conducts advocacy and facilitate the advocacy of African activists at the United Nations (UN) and the African Commission on Human & People's Rights (ACHPR).  Responsibilities include: lobbying state officials and key stakeholders; recruiting, writing and editing written material (i.e. shadow reports, submissions to special mechanisms, position papers); and monitoring and analyzing opportunities and challenges to increase the accountability of states and inter-governmental bodies on LGBT rights.  . Develops and maintains relationships with African human rights defenders, lawyers and academics working on issues such as women's rights, sex worker rights, and HIV and AIDS.  . Works closely with Regional Program Coordinator - Middle East/North Africa to ensure an integration of activities at Africa regional treaty bodies.  . Collaborates with the Development Department to secure funds for human rights documentation capacity building and global advocacy work in Africa. programming.  . Collaborates with the Communications Department to produce material on IGLHRC's work in Africa, including by contributing to the IGLHRC blog, newsletter, and website.  . Collaborates with the Finance Department to produce budgets and monitor spending.   *Knowledge, skills and attitudes required * . Deep knowledge and experience of political, social, economic realities in Africa  . Masters degree in political science, international relations, African Studies, or related field, or B.A. and commensurate practical experience.  . Knowledge and track record on promoting LGBT and other sexual/human rights.  . Experience producing credible human rights documentation.  . Experience with high-level advocacy in a social justice context.  . Practical experienced developing and implementing training . . Excellent writing and editing skills  . Commitment to the on-going study of political change, cultural norms and movement-building.  . Commitment to the pursuit of liberation from persecution based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression within the broader context of a desire to eliminate all intersecting forms of oppression.  . Willingness and ability to travel extensively.  . Willingness to work in South Africa.  . Ability to communicate in English and at least one additional language widely spoken in Africa (French, Portuguese, Swahili).
