'The X Factor' Week 2 Recap: The Judges Play Mean, More Talent Is Discovered (omg!)

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- "The X Factor" wrapped up its audition rounds phase on Thursday night, pulling in some of the most original talent of the competition so far - both good and positively awful.

In the spirit of saving the best for last, we'll run down the worst first, and that had to be the judges' behavior.

PLAY IT NOW: New On TV: What Worked? What Didn't? (September 29, 2011)

Sure, Clarissa Cheatham, a 27-year-old office clerk, who goes by the nickname "Cashmere," was awful as she gave a tone deaf rendition of "Always Be My Baby" by Mariah Carey, but Simon Cowell was worse. Clarissa's smile faded when Simon, in front of thousands, couldn't control his giggling as he told her, "Cashmere, when you said that people screamed after [you performed] karaoke, I don't think that was a compliment," giving the impression he was laughing at her.

More brutal than Clarissa having the wind taken out of her sails was L.A. Reid telling Emily, one-half of teenage "Glee"-esque group (think Rachel and Kurt) Ausem, that only her partner Austin was a star. "No disrespect," L.A. began as Emily's face dropped, "but I'm not convinced of the duo." Luckily, Simon lobbied for them, and they got through.

As for the good stuff, there was plenty, beginning with a pint-sized teen with a heck of a lot of attitude - Brian Bradley.

The little man, just 14, hit the stage, demanding in his rap that the listener, "stop looking at my mom!" "You are arrogant, obnoxious, argumentative, but you are one of the most talented young people I've heard in a long, long time," Simon said. L.A., however, had much, much loftier praise. "I used to run this label called Def Jam, and all the years that I was there... I was looking for you and you never walked in, so I'm the luckiest guy in the world that you walked into my life today," he said.

Tora Woloshin, 21, hit the stage looking like a blend of Lady Gaga and Kat Von D, but when she opened her mouth to sing - The Jackson Five's "I Want You Back" - she rocked the number out with a rock grit to her big, poppy voice. "There's something about you, the minute you walk out," Simon raved. "That's why this show is called 'The X Factor' - it's more than just a voice, it's something else and I think you could be really special."

Pretty-on-the-eyes Brennin Hunt, 26, from Nashville, Tenn., looked like a model, but he wasn't just a pretty face, performing an original song - "How We Make It" - and easily sailing through the judges' vote.

Jazzlyn Little was petrified when she hit the stage, and could barely respond when Simon asked her simple questions like her age - 16 - but when the music came on (Mary J. Blige's "I'm Going Down"), she was nowhere close to a shy little girl. Paula Abdul and Nicole hugged each other in disbelief and L.A. wondered aloud where her big sound came from.

5 Reasons Creating Information Products Should Be the Foundation ...

There are several major business models on the Internet. Some of them include: creating information products, Adsense, affiliate marketing, selling on Ebay, and even network marketing. All of these methods work just fine, but the most successful Internet entrepreneurs all have something in common ? they focus on selling things that they produce themselves. This article will focus on 5 reasons why selling your own products is the best way to do business.

1. One reason you should have your own products is that your business doesn?t depend on how any one company treats you. This is the case with Adsense, e-bay, and affiliate marketing to an extent. By being so spending on others, you are giving up a lot of control to your income, which can be disastrous if something happens to the company who pays you or if you are no longer in their good graces. This problem doesn?t arise if you create your own products, because your efforts don?t depend on another company.

2. A second reason is that you control your reputation. With affiliate marketing, if you refer a customer to a bad product, or to someone with bad customer service, that reflects badly on you. Oftentimes affiliates don?t review the products they recommend, and that is understandable because of a lack of time, but the result is that oftentimes affiliates will be tricked into recommending shoddy products. With your own products, you can be sure it is quality because you are the one who made it. So you can put all of your energy and efforts behind it without reservation.

3. A third reason is that you make more money. Why get 50% of the sale of an item when you can get 100%. Sure, there is a bit more time you spend on the front end to make your product, but once you make it, the rest is easy street because it is pure profit.

4. The best free traffic in the world is for product owners. What traffic am I referring to? Affiliate traffic of course. When you see huge launches in the Internet marketing community we hear hard to believe accounts of people making anywhere from 1-10 million dollars or more in a day or less. The number are real, but the way it is done is through efforts of affiliates. Being an affiliate yourself is ok, but having them work for you is even better because while they spend their time and money driving traffic to your website, you just sit back and collect the profits produced from their efforts. Sure, you might not get 100% of the money, but the money you get is 100%, and you also get the lead which is often worth more than the sale itself.

5. The last reason I?ll cover for creating information products yourself is that there will be much fewer competitors in a market. Many affiliates scour markets to find products to promote but t hey don?t want to be bothered with actually creating them. But product owners who are willing to go the extra step and make a product will find that there are fewer product creators out there than affiliates, so you will have an easier time establishing yourself in the market.

(AP) ? Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad spent more than 40 hours in the shark-filled waters between Cuba and the Florida Keys, climbing into a boat only to be treated for searing welts left by Portuguese man o' war stings. Left swollen and red, Nyad had no choice but to end her trek early when medics warned another sting could be deadly.

The 62-year-old soldiered on for a time, cutting eye and mouth holes into a cap she wore over her face to protect against future stings. She surpassed 100,000 strokes, but the stings ? which team members said left what looked like branding marks from the jellyfish-like creatures' tentacles ? were too much of a risk.

"I trained this hard for this big dream I had for so many years, and to think these stupid little Portuguese man o' war take it down," Nyad told The Associated Press, just hours after getting out of the water. "It's a huge disappointment."

She said she was in the best shape of her life but was blinded by the stings. Late Sunday morning, she heeded the warnings of experts who told her not to continue another two days in the water.

"You go into convulsions, your spine feels paralyzed. I've had kidney stones. Nothing compares to the pain," Nyad said, wearing loose bandages and rehydrating with water and juice on her boat. "It just took the life force out of me."

Nyad arrived Sunday evening in Key West, where she spoke with reporters. She walked off her boat "Sunluver" wearing a white bathrobe, her face and lips swollen from the stings, and pulled up a sleeve to show a long cross-shaped welt on her right forearm.

"It's such a bitter pill," she said. "I am so capable of that swim. That's the end though."

"Because if it was the weather or Tylenol, but those damned jellyfish," she added.

Nyad said that as she swam, she felt paralysis in her back. She recalled swimming through the two stings, which she described as like something out of a sci-fi movie when the tentacles whipped across her.

"I went through two of them and I kept swimming," said Nyad, who wore long pants and a long-sleeved shirt while swimming. Her clothing covered everything but her hands feet and lips, and she got stung in the lips.

"My lips are like Angelina's," she quipped.

But Nyad said she also took pride in swimming for 40 hours, saying she did much better than in a previous try in August. She said visions of the Florida coastline helped keep her going.

"I pictured it," she said. "I really pictured it. I knew I could do it. I just couldn't get there. I wanted that feeling to be on the beach so badly. I'm just not going to have it."

Her team tentatively scheduled a press conference in Key West for Monday morning.

Nyad was making her second attempt in as many months at the Cuba-Florida crossing, a lifelong dream that she first tried as a 28-year-old back in 1978, when she swam inside a steel shark cage for about 42 hours before ending the attempt. A cageless attempt this past August fell short 29 hours in when, gasping for breath, Nyad threw in the towel after an 11-hour asthma attack she blamed on a bad reaction to a new medicine.

Australian swimmer Susie Maroney successfully swam the shark-filled waters from Cuba through the Straits and to the Keys in 1997, though she used a cage. Nyad was trying to become the first to finish it without a cage.

Earlier in her latest swim, Nyad received oxygen and a steroid shot from her doctors and was treading water while she recovered from the stings.

After that, her team said in a website update that a so-called "staged swim record" would still be valid as long as she was on the boat only for treatment and not to rest ? rather than a nonstop record.

Nyad's website said she spent the night trying to recall favorite songs and thinking upbeat thoughts while slipping through the waters under a nighttime sky bristling with stars and a sliver of a crescent moon.

The swimmer faced other obstacles aside from the man o' war stings. On Saturday, handlers spotted barracudas in the area, and she got a visit from a curious Oceanic white tipped shark that was shooed off by a support diver.

Without a cage to protect her, Nyad relied on equipment surrounding her with an electrical field that is harmless but deters most sharks. Her divers are there to gently discourage any who make it through. But not all encounters with marine life were unpleasant. Earlier in her journey, 10 pilot whales emerged in the distance ahead of the swimmer, according to one team tweet.

The Los Angeles woman regularly paused to rest and refuel on food that her assistants passed to her in the water, but without getting on the boat. To maintain her strength she ate pasta, bananas, bite-size pieces of peanut butter sandwiches, and high-calorie and high-carbohydrate drinks.

Dozens of well-wishers flocked to social media sites Sunday after Nyad climbed out of the water, calling her an inspiration.

The athlete in her is still battling disappointment, but Nyad said she's working to gain a positive perspective focusing on the camaraderie from the two-year effort.

"I can live beyond it and think of all the good that's come of it, just to live a life of passion," she said.

Jennifer Kay in Key West, Fla. contributed to this report.

Top 20 Paid Survey Panels | Paid Online Surveys

Top 20 Paid Survey Panels
125x125 ani Top 20 Paid Survey Panels

Filling out survey questionnaires to get paid for online surveys is a great way to make extra money. All you need is an Internet connection and your opinions. There are traps out there, but you can avoid them if you know how to. And your can then go on to make very good money?

Imagine yourself sitting at home or at your favorite place (anywhere you have an Internet connection) and making money filling out paid surveys. Sounds like an impossible dream? Maybe it is for some? but for thousands of others it is a daily reality. Actually, it?s easy to get paid for online surveys, and paid well.

Paid online surveys are a huge business on the Net, with thousands of new surveys being made every week. Many thousands of survey participants are receiving checks in the mail or deposits in their PayPal accounts every month. You could join them, get paid for online surveys and make money, if you do it right.

To succeed you must understand that only about 20% of survey makers offer the legitimate paid online surveys that pay well, on time in cash or equivalent. Another 40% are so-so. Sometimes they pay enough to make it worthwhile, sometimes not.

The final 40% are simply time-wasters who expect you to work for free or will try to sell you things. Or worse, they will sell your contact info to shady high-pressure sales companies which will bombard you with trashy offers.

To get paid for online surveys and make money you will need a good list of legitimate paid survey panels with a high proportion of survey makers that pay (those in the top 20%. The secret is in getting that list. In reality, you will have to pay something for your list, either in a lot of work or or with $30 to $50 in cash.

Yes, there are ?free lists? out there. They?re one of the traps to be avoided. Few things are really free. So who is paying for ?free lists?? The 80% of no-pay/low-pay survey makers must have new recruits to replace those that quit. They pay recruiting fees to anyone who sends them more recruits to exploit

For those ?free lists? the list distributors collect recruitment fees and make money, the survey makers make money on the recruits. However, the list users, the survey participants, get the short end of the deal.

They don?t really get paid for online surveys by those low-pay/no-pay survey makers that exploit participants. They eventually get tired of working for nothing and quit, just like those before them, the ones they were recruited to replace.

To get a good list, make sure that YOU pay for it so the seller is trying to please YOU! Look to paid survey membership sites that maintain lists of good survey makers. For a small one-time fee you can join them. get a copy of their list and get started fast, on the right track.

Only consider those paid survey sites that offer a strong money back guarantee, backed up by a bank or financial company like PayPal or ClickBank. If they won?t guarantee your satisfaction, then they are not serious. Don?t even think about trusting your membership fee with any site without a strong guarantee.

From this group with strong guarantees (there are at least 75 that should qualify) choose one with a low refund rate. The refund rate is the way to determine the opinions of their current and past clients regarding the quality and value or the service they provide.

Low refund rates mean happy clients. Clients who used their list, got paid for online surveys, made money and were satisfied. High refund rates indicate unhappy clients who tried their list, did NOT get paid for online surveys, did not make money, became dissatisfied and demanded their money back.

So choose a paid survey membership site with a low refund rate, join up, get their list and then apply to all of the survey makers on that list. That way you will get a good list, get paid for online surveys, make money and join the happy clients of that paid survey membership site.

Secured Debt Consolidation Loans In Quick Detail | Personal ...

Secured debt consolidation loans are the ones, which pay off some or all of your existing debts. This way you can pay off only one combined loan with one monthly payment. May you be paying off an auto loan, mortgage, credit card bill, medical bill or other miscellaneous bills, these loans are of great help. You could breathe easy and kick back (well, almost) and not have to be burdened by the borderline insults and verbal abuse and patronization thrown your way by loan collectors. So, you should think to consolidate your debts before your creditors suck you dry of your money by charging you high interest and late fee penalties.

Secured debt consolidation loans are offered against collateral. The magnitude of a secured debt consolidation loan ranges from $5,000 ? $100,000. However, the amount of loan you can avail depends upon your credit history, repayment capacity and equity in the collateral.

You could qualify for an impressive secured debt consolidation loan if you have good credit, are capable of repaying the loan and have a sizeable collateral. In addition, you could even get a relatively low interest rate. If your credit history isn?t exactly impeccable, you can still qualify for secured debt consolidation loans. Just set your expectations for a high rate of interest and short life of loan, or LOL.

Further, you must know that a secured debt consolidation loan is also a loan like others, which you need repay. The costs of missing a payment on the loan can be quite dear. Expect to pay onerous late fees. And when you default on payments, you may even lose your collateral in the process. Nevertheless it?s smooth sailing if you pay on time.

Therefore, in order to secure an easy and smooth transition, you will need to take an absolute care in its repayment.

The first step in applying for secured debt consolidation loan would be taken even before you apply ? you must get a ballpark figure of how much it would take to consolidate those debts. To solve this purpose, online lenders also help you arrive at a decision in this regard. These lenders specialize in giving out quotes. These quotes would include all pertinent information including the interest rate, amount of the loan and the life of loan.

Already, you can see this is one of the outsourcing benefits of using an outsourcer.

Outsourcers can do a variety of tasks for you. This can range from simple things like establishing a custom graphic header for your blog site to setting up a new social media account. They can also do more elaborate tasks like getting new followers for your Twitter account or even posting your articles to different article services.

Which Tasks should You Do and How Do You Know When It?s Time to Look Into Outsourcing Benefits?

Here?s a general rule of thumb.

Hire an outsourcer if you have no idea how to do a task and it will be something you will not need to do very normally.

A good case in point of this would be building a website. If you don?t have good technical abilities it could take you a good amount of time to build a web site and you may not even be very happy with the end result. Here is another outsourcing benefit. You save time and end up with a blog that you ?ll be glad to show individuals.

There are certain things that you really should take the time to learn though. If it is an expertise you ?ll need to instruct others in your business, you should really take the time to learn this ability first before you hire an outsourcer.

This will confirm very valuable when it comes time to train the people you have brought into your business. Once you have mastered the talent, you can then hire an outsourcer to do this task for you. This will free up some of your time so you can focus on other areas of your business. Another outsourcing benefit.

How Do You Know What to Watch Out For And How Do You Get The Best Outsourcing Benefits?

There is quite a bit of opposition in outsourcing today and in my experience there isn?t very much risk in using one. When you first get started you should use websites like ODesk.com or Fiverr.com. These websites will give you a good idea of what an outsourcer can do and how much each type of task will cost you.

Some of the benefits of using internet sites like these are:

* Each outsourcer has reviews done for their work
* Competitors drives the prices down.
* You can read other people?s reviews before selecting an outsourcer

Another one of the tremendous outsourcing benefits is that you refuse payment if you are not happy with the work or send it back to have them make some changes.

One thing you need to entertain is the job the outsourcer does is only going to be as good as what you ask for. If you ask someone to craft an article for you and they give you back a 350 word article and you wanted a 650 word article, you can?t get upset if you didn?t tell them. The more specific you are about what you want done, the happier you will be with the end product.

Paying for the outsourcer is easy at websites like Fivver allow you to pay through Paypal and this is an excellent way to go.

There are no end of great outsourcing benefits that can really help you control your time. If you have room in your budget to hire an outsourcer, don?t wait. Using an outsourcer can really help you take your business to the next level.

Get more secrets about Outsourcing Benefits by reading our blog regularly and learn how you can benefit from Outsourcing Benefits more, with less stress and achieve better results.

97% Project Nim

All Critics (107) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (104) | Rotten (3)

Marsh ... masterfully spins a harrowing tale of human arrogance that eventually gives way to cruelty bordering on the pathological.

Nim is as unforgettable as the treatment of him is unspeakable.

Like the experiment itself, "Project Nim" morphs from something inspiring and often humorous to a pointed and disturbing portrait of arrogance run amok. Greed and glory end up overriding decency and altruism, and it's heartbreaking to watch.

What makes this film especially engrossing is that what happened between that chimp and the humans with whom he spent his life in intimate contact turns out to be only half the story that Marsh, who directed the electrifying "Man on Wire," has to tell.

Marsh tells this story clearly and sympathetically, and he has the backlog of film and the witnesses to do so.

At times hilarious but ultimately heartbreaking, "Project Nim" is a great chronicle of the 1970s and all the nutty ideas that implies; academia in particular comes in for a hard reckoning.

A thought-proving and entirely moving portrait of human arrogance -- in general and with some very, very specific examples.

Marsh knows this material is explosive, so he presents it simply and with little sentiment (against all odds, "Nim" is frequently very funny).

For a movie about an ape, it sheds an interesting light on humanity. Animals may be wild, but only humans are cruel.

Project Nim doesn't try to reconcile its different understandings of Nim -- as an experiment, a child, a projection of various selves, and a complex, independent being.

Marsh is too content framing the entire film around the narrative spun by its subjects, rather than stamping his own authorship on the film, and as a result it lacks the power and depth of his previous work.

After watching this eye-opening documentary, one almost hopes for a rebellion of the chimpanzees like the one seen in the latest installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise.

About as far as you can get from cin?ma v?rit? in its artful combination of archive material, existing documentary footage, newly filmed interviews and dramatic reconstruction, to trace Nim's strange progress.

Despite some heartbreak in the last half, this film brims with humanity and some priceless humour, too.

This many-faceted time capsule sheds little light, but buried inside it are vexing questions and the still-beating heart of a special creature.

Marsh, who made the multi-awarded Man on a Wire, takes no sides but lets the humans speak for themselves, rum lot that they are.

A corrective to all those family films and documentaries, many of them by Disney, that sentimentalise - and patronise - wild animals by trying to turn them into quirky, mentally subnormal humans.

Marsh's poignant film showcases the best and worst instincts of human nature and tells an extraordinary tale.

You end up fearing for the humans who contact him. At the same time, you feel his rage.

The chimp comes out of it well. Homo sapiens, of course, is found wanting.

In Project Nim Marsh is much less concerned with the scientific results of the study than he is with the behavior of the human beings involved, particularly Dr. Terrace whose behavior was, to put it mildly, not a credit to his species.

As a cinema experience, Project Nim was never likely to reach the heights of Marsh's Man on Wire, but the eccentricities of his story made it well worth telling.

One of the best documentaries of the year.

A documentary, stunningly watchable, about the 1970s American research team that explored the "educability" of a chimpanzee.

Online Gamers Help Solve Protein Structure

60-Second Science | More Science

Researchers created the game Foldit to simulate protein folding and used teams of online gamers to help solve the structure of an enzyme. Cynthia Graber reports.

More 60-Second Science

Scientists can now include online gaming in their problem-solving arsenal. Because game players seem to have provided an answer to a scientific question that?s vexed researchers for a decade.

Scientists wanted to know the structure of a protein-cutting enzyme produced by a retrovirus similar to HIV. They haven?t been able to solve the protein structure using standard computational methods.

Now, the game?researchers developed Foldit in 2008. Teams of players fold molecules and rotate amino acids to create 3-D protein structures. Gamers get points for structure stability.

So researchers asked gamers to try to solve this particular protein. Within three weeks, the gamers found a good solution. The scientists then refined it and were able to completely determine the protein?s structure. Having the structure could inform the use of drugs to block the enzyme, and provide another tool against retroviruses, including HIV.

The researchers say that people have better spatial reasoning skills than computers?and that using both humans and machines might be a way to overcome various structural challenges. The results appear in the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. [Firas Khatib et al, Crystal structure of a monomeric retroviral protease solved by protein folding game players] Co-authored by researchers?and a number of gamers.

House disaster vote sets up showdown with Senate

(AP) ? The GOP-controlled House is on track to pass $3.7 billion in disaster relief as part of a must-pass bill to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month.

House passage of the bill Wednesday would come over the opposition of most Democrats, who oppose it because it contains $1.5 billion in cuts from a government program to help car companies build more fuel-efficient vehicles. That money would pay for the most urgently needed portion of the disaster aid.

The Energy Department program subsidizes low-interest loans to help car companies and parts manufacturers retool factories to build vehicles that will meet new, tougher fuel economy standards.

Democrats say cutting the program could cost up to 10,000 jobs because there wouldn't be enough money for all pending applications.

"While the government has a responsibility to fund disaster response in places that were devastated by Hurricane Irene or other natural disasters, it is unconscionable to use funds designed to create jobs in manufacturing states to pay for it," Reps. Gary Peters, D-Mich., and Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., said in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

They credited $3.5 billion of loan subsidies with supporting loans totaling $9.2 billion that created or saved 41,000 jobs in Tennessee, California, Indiana, Michigan, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio. Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have already received loans; Chrysler Group LLC is awaiting final approval of a loan.

House GOP leaders also have to shore up support from some tea party Republicans who say the underlying stopgap measure would allow the government to spend too much. It lives within a new spending cap set by last month's budget and debt deal, but more than 50 conservatives say GOP leaders should still press for lower spending levels for the day-to-day operations of Cabinet agencies set by annual spending bills.

After the measure passes the House, a battle looms with Senate Democrats. The two sides are divided over how much disaster aid to provide and whether any of it should be paid for with offsetting spending cuts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said that once the stopgap measure passes the House, he'll move to substitute the Senate's $7 billion aid package for the House's version. It will take at least seven Republicans to join with majority Democrats to win the 60 votes likely required to defeat GOP blocking tactics. Ten Republicans voted with Reid last week to pass the stand-alone disaster aid measure, but their votes can't be taken for granted now. Tea party favorites like Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., were among those who voted with Reid last week, but the partially paid-for House version may be more to their liking.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., predicted the conflict could be worked out in time for the Senate to make a Thursday night getaway to a weeklong recess. Such a scenario probably depends on Republicans prevailing.

"Congress always responds appropriately to disasters," McConnell said. "We're having a discussion about the appropriate way to do that, and I'm confident it will be resolved."

Reid, however, is spoiling for the battle. "We're not going to cave in on this," he said.

The underlying stopgap funding measure would finance the government through Nov. 18 to give lawmakers more time to try to reach agreement on the 12 unfinished spending bills needed to run government agencies on a day-to-day basis for the 2012 budget year that begins Oct. 1.

3 DIY Fabulous Fall Projects For The Home | Care2 Healthy Living

The mornings here have become cool and crisp. Fall is in the air and that puts me in the nesting mood to create craft projects to warm up my home.

Here are 3 of my current favorite DIY sites, and 3 fabulous cool weather DIY projects:

1. CRAFT?s goal is to unite, inspire, inform, and entertain a community of highly imaginative and resourceful people who undertake amazing crafting projects. I like the quirkiness and the diverse array of projects from all over the web that CRAFT brings to its readers.

Soon fall will usher in the oranges and browns of nature, but I?m trying to savor the last moments of summer greens, so I love this Mason Jar Wall Planter that CRAFT posted from Not Just a Housewife. It that creates a wall of bursting green plants. It?s simple, sturdy and great for hanging vine plants.

2. The Purl Bee strives to create fun and approachable projects to knit, crochet, sew, and stitch. Anyone who follows my Econesting blog, knows that I love to knit. Here?s an archive of my Care2 knitting posts. The Purl Bee is one of the most reliable sources for handwork projects.

Since my fingers are just warming up for the knitting season, I?m planning to make this Lap Blanket. It?s super easy to knit with its big, loopy stitches. Try a toasty eco-friendly bulky yarn.

3. Photojojo publishes a great newsletter about photography. Photojojo scours the Web and finds amazing photo DIY projects.

I recently discovered Photojojo because I was trying to figure out what to do with old negatives. Seems a shame to throw them out, but since I?m not making copies of photos from negatives anymore, these photographic images have become the endangered species in the photography world.? How cool would these Negative Candle Holders be for Halloween!

New bird flu outbreak reported in India (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Authorities in eastern India will start culling chickens and destroying eggs to contain a new outbreak of H5 bird flu, the government said in a statement on Tuesday, as a mutant strain of the virus is spreading elsewhere in Asia.

Surveillance was stepped up in West Bengal, a state severely hit by bird flu outbreaks in the past.

The federal government is pushing local authorities to ban the movement of poultry and its products, and restricting access to the affected area after samples tested positive for H5, a government statement said.

"It has been decided to immediately commence the culling of birds and destruction of eggs and feed material to control further spread of the disease," it said.

Last month, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) warned of a possible resurgence of bird flu and said a mutant strain of the H5N1 virus was spreading in Asia and beyond.

It was not immediately clear if the latest outbreak in India was related to the new Asian strain.

Virologists warn there is no vaccine against the H5N1 strain recently found in China and Vietnam that could potentially carry risks for humans and called for closer monitoring of the disease in poultry and wild birds to stop it spreading.

Bird flu first broke out in India in 2006 and millions of chickens and ducks have been culled since to contain the virus, but it has resurfaced from time to time.

India did not give further details about the exact strain of flu found in the latest outbreak West Bengal.
