NASA satellite shows a mean Irene's fury

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) ? After pounding North Carolina and Virginia on Aug. 27, Hurricane Irene made a second landfall near Little Egg Inlet, N.J., early Sunday morning, Aug. 28, still as a category one hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kilometers per hour). It then weakened slightly before making a third landfall over Coney Island, N.Y. as a 65-mph (100-kilometer-per-hour) tropical storm. Irene's heavy rains, winds and storm surge are causing widespread problems throughout the U.S. mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

This infrared image of Irene was taken by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on NASA's Aqua spacecraft at 2:47 a.m. EDT on Aug. 27, a few hours before the storm's second landfall in New Jersey.

The AIRS data create an accurate 3-D map of atmospheric temperature, water vapor and clouds, data that are useful to forecasters. The image shows the temperature of Irene's cloud tops or the surface of Earth in cloud-free regions. The coldest cloud-top temperatures appear in purple, indicating towering cold clouds and heavy precipitation. The infrared signal of AIRS does not penetrate through clouds. Where there are no clouds, AIRS reads the infrared signal from the surface of the ocean waters, revealing warmer temperatures in orange and red.

AIRS is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., under contract to NASA. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

More information about AIRS can be found at http://airs.jpl.nasa.gov. More on NASA's hurricane research and Irene is online at NASA's hurricanes/tropical cyclones website: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/main/index.html and the JPL TC-IDEAS hurricane website: http://hurricanes.jpl.nasa.gov .

NRL CEO David Gallop said? These players represent what can be achieved both on and off the field and what opportunities are available through rugby league to build careers,

?Each of them will tell you that the studies and training they have pursued has helped make them better footballers and better people and that?s an important lesson for any aspiring NRL players to take on board.

?I also want to acknowledge the work of Mark Coyne and his committee, Paul Heptonstall, Nigel Vagana, Jane Lowder and Tony McFadyen and all the club welfare and education officers.

?The programs and opportunities they have developed and the way the players have embraced them has changed the face of the game.?

Chairman of the NRL-RPLA education and welfare committee, former international, Maroons and Dragons star Mark Coyne added ?There has been a fundamental shift in the way players prepare for life after footy. Once the players who were studying and working used to be the exceptions, now it is the ones who are not that are in the minority,?.

Nation's biggest subway system to stop for Irene

The nation's largest subway system and arriving flights at the five main New York City-area airports were to be halted at noon Saturday as Hurricane Irene spun its way up the Eastern Seaboard, forcing more than 300,000 evacuations and dimming lights at Citi Field and on Broadway.

By deciding to shut down the transit system, millions of carless New Yorkers from the Bronx's most distant reaches down through Manhattan and out to the beaches of Brooklyn and Queens will be faced with the question of where to go and how to get there.

Among them are 82-year-old Abe Feinstein, who has lived since the early 1960s on the eighth floor of a building that overlooks the famed boardwalk of Coney Island, which is in the evacuation zone and was alive with residents and visitors Friday.

"How can I get out of Coney Island? What am I going to do? Run with this walker?" he said.

But Feinstein also wasn't too worried.

He recalled watching a hurricane in 1985 from an apartment down the street from where he lives now.

"I have nothing to worry about," Feinstein said. "I've been through bad weather before. It's just not going to be a problem for us."

No new evacuations were ordered as of Saturday morning, when the streets were nearly empty, with few people walking or driving. On Wall Street, sandbags were placed around subway grates nearest the East River, which is expected to surge as the hurricane nears New York.

Bridges and tunnels also could be closed as the storm approaches, clogging traffic in an already congested city. Taxis in New York City were to switch from metered fares to zone fares Saturday morning, meaning riders would be charged by which part of the city they were being driven to, rather than how far they were being taken.

The five main New York City-area airports were scheduled to close at noon Saturday for arriving domestic and international flights. Three of them, Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty, are among the nation's busiest.

At. Kennedy airport Friday night, travelers rushed to make some of the last flights leaving before the hurricane was expected to hit. Some terminal entrances were already closed ahead of Saturday's shutdown. Passengers waiting in line for security checks were led between terminals on ramps closed to vehicles as security agents tried to get the passengers through on time.

Officials hoped most residents would stay with family and friends, and for the rest the city opened nearly 100 shelters with a capacity of 71,000 people.

Irene was expected to make landfall in North Carolina on Saturday, then roll up the Interstate 95 corridor reaching New York on Sunday. A hurricane warning was issued for the city Friday afternoon, the first time that's happened since Gloria in 1985.

If the storm stays on its current path, skyscraper windows could shatter, tree limbs would fall and debris would be tossed around. Streets in the southern tip of the city could be under a few feet of water, and police readied rescue boats but said they wouldn't go out if conditions were poor.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was confident people would get out of the storm's way.

"We do not have the manpower to go door-to-door and drag people out of their homes," he said. "Nobody's going to get fined. Nobody's going to go to jail. But if you don't follow this, people might die."

Nevertheless, he said that for those who don't heed the warnings, police officers would use loudspeakers on patrol vehicles to spread the word about the evacuation Saturday.

Several New York landmarks were under the evacuation order, including the Battery Park City area, where tourists catch ferries to the Statue of Liberty. Construction was stopping throughout the city, and workers at the World Trade Center site were dismantling a crane and securing equipment. Bloomberg said there would be no effect on the Sept. 11 memorial opening the day after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

But sporting events, concerts and even Broadway were going dark.

New flood gates were put in place outside Citi Field as a precaution, but Major League Baseball took no chances. The Braves-Mets games Saturday and Sunday were postponed, to be made up as a doubleheader on Sept. 8.

All Broadway musicals and plays were canceled for Saturday and Sunday, as well as "Zarkana" by Cirque du Soleil at Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center Theater's "War Horse." It's the first time Broadway has shut down for an emergency since the blackout in 2003.

In lower Manhattan, Milton Melendez and partner Shea Collins were headed uptown to a neighborhood north of Little Italy. Melendez, who survived Hurricane David as a child in the Dominican Republic, was worried about their apartment windows being blown out. Collins was a little more blase.

"This is the same thing as a snowstorm," she said. "They say there's going to be 10 feet and there's four inches."

Bloomberg weathered criticism after a Dec. 26 storm dumped nearly two feet of snow that seemed to catch officials by surprise. Subway trains, buses and ambulances got stuck in the snow, some for hours, and streets were impassable for days. Bloomberg ultimately called it an "inadequate and unacceptable" response.

This time officials weren't taking any chances. Transit officials said they can't run once sustained winds reach 39 mph, and they need eight hours to move trains and equipment to safety.

The subway system won't reopen until at least Monday, after pumps remove water from flooded stations. Even on a dry day, about 200 pump rooms remove 13 million to 15 million gallons of water that seep into the tunnels deep underground.

About 1.6 million people live in Manhattan, and about 6.8 million live in the city's other four boroughs.

For those with cars, parking was available at the city's evacuation centers. From there, each family will be assigned to a shelter and taken there by bus.

In the Queens community of the Rockaways, more than 111,000 people live on a barrier peninsula connected to the city by two bridges and to Long Island to the west. Everyone there was ordered to evacuate, which brought the total in the city to 370,000, city officials said.

The city's public transit system carries about 5 million passengers on an average weekday, and the entire system has never before been halted because of a natural disaster. It was seriously hobbled by an August 2007 rainstorm that disabled or delayed every one of the city's subway lines. And it was shut down after the 9/11 attacks and during a 2005 strike.

In the past 200 years, New York has seen only a few significant hurricanes. In September 1821, a hurricane raised tides by 13 feet in an hour and flooded the southernmost tip of Manhattan in an area that now includes Wall Street and the World Trade Center memorial. In 1938, a storm dubbed the Long Island Express came ashore about 75 miles east of the city on neighboring Long Island and then hit New England, killing 700 people and leaving 63,000 homeless.

And in 1944, Midtown was flooded, where Times Square, Broadway theaters and the Empire State Building are located.

Military widows bond at Alaska retreat (AP)

GIRDWOOD, Alaska ? Jennifer Tullis still keeps her husband's camouflage uniform in the closet, all starched, ironed and folded, even though he died 12 years ago.

"He took so much pride in that," she said, smiling at the memory of her husband, Michael Peterson, a powerlifting Marine from Tooele, Utah, whose nickname was Ogre.

"I lost my husband when I was 19 to suicide, which is one of the harder ways because there's so many stigmas attached to it," said Tullis, of Valley Center, Calif.

Tullis and about 75 other military widows ? ranging in age from 21 to 62 ? shared memories of their loved ones while hiking rugged wooded trails, canyoneering in the backcountry and rafting the rapids of Alaska's Crow Creek last weekend. They were participants in the second Alaska Adventure excursion organized by TAPS, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

Tullis turned to the group for support when Peterson died, and now gives back as a peer mentor to the growing ranks of military widows and widowers whose spouses or significant others died in combat, from illness, suicide, "every type of loss imaginable," said TAPS founder and president Bonnie Carroll.

"What brings us together and really binds us as a community is their life, and their service and their sacrifice to this nation. This is about honoring the life, and remembering the love far more than it is about mourning the death," Carroll said.

Tullis simply calls TAPS family.

"These people are family because when you go through the loss of a spouse when you're young, it's something that no one understands if they haven't lost their spouse because it's unnatural. So other people are going through anniversaries and having babies and buying houses, and you're grieving," she said.

Carroll founded TAPS two years after her husband, Brig. Gen. Tom Carroll, the assistant adjutant general of the Alaska Army National Guard, and seven other Guard senior leaders died in an Army C12 plane crash.

"Certainly for our family it was a devastating tragedy," she said from a second-story patio at the Alyeska Resort, some 50 miles south of Anchorage in scenic Girdwood. "But out of that, we formed a small group that recognized the healing power of that peer connection, of coming together with others who truly understand the depth of this loss."

That was the intent behind the Alaska weekend, to create a safe haven for the women where they could tell the stories that perhaps their friends and family back home have tired of hearing.

"What we do here isn't therapy, but it is tremendously therapeutic. You know, the word counseling doesn't really apply. There's a much better word, and that's companioning, when you're working with someone who has lost a loved one," Carroll said.

The Washington, D.C.-based group has helped more than 30,000 survivors since it formed in 1994, and most of them, about 22,000, since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

The Alaska retreat didn't involve whiteboards, speakers or seminars. Instead, it was only intended to allow the women to enjoy their time together in Alaska's wilderness. The organization provides other, more directed seminars, including Good Grief Camps, across the nation. A National Military Suicide Survivor seminar will be held in October in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Last year, TAPS took 10,649 calls on its 24-hour resource and information line, receiving more than 184,000 calls since it formed 17 years ago. It also made 63,452 calls to survivors last year, everything from reminding survivors they are not alone to following up on a wide array of needed services.

Participants here had the best of Alaska for their journey.

They toured an old gold mine, rappelled down cliffs, hiked up Mount Alyeska, saw bears, petted a moose (it was safely behind a fence at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center), and rafted the rapids of Crow Creek outside Girdwood. The spent the last two days of the trip in Anchorage, taking part in a scavenger hunt, in which one task was to find a cardboard cutout of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in a gift shop, and a marathon before heading home.

"Touching a moose is the most amazing experience ever," said a beaming Jennifer Hankins of San Diego. "I've heard horror stories that they attack people, so to touch one and, like, feel their antlers, and they're velvety, and you just want to kiss their face."

Hankins found TAPS after her fiance, Matthew Trent Hicks Sr., died from a sudden illness while serving aboard a Navy ship. They have a son, Matthew Hicks Jr.

Hankins said many of her friends disappeared because they didn't know what to say to her after Hicks died in 2008. She shut out others, she said, because they didn't want to hear her honest answer when they would ask, "Are you OK?"

It wasn't until she found support within TAPS that things changed.

"It was like somebody opened the doors to what is now life. I could sit there and talk about Matt all day long and nobody would shut me up. They just wanted to hear everything, and I wanted to hear everything, and I felt like I was normal again. Because when he died, I didn't feel l like I was normal at all," she said.

Karen Cioffi - Writing and Marketing: Book Sales Getting Musty?

Today I have a guest post from award winning author and expert marketer, Carolyn Howard Johnson. So, get out your pen and paper, or just copy and save this informative article for your personal use.

*****

Book Sales Getting Musty?
By Carolyn Howard-Johnson
Adapted from the multi award-winning Frugal Book Promoter (www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo)

In the world of publishing as in life, persistence counts. If course, there is no way to keep a book at the top of the charts forever, but if you keep reviving it, you might hold a classic in your hands. Or your marketing efforts for one book may propel your next one to greater heights.

I can?t tell you how often I?ve seen authors who measure their success by book sales give up on their book (and sometimes on writing) just about the time their careers are about ready to take off. I tell my students and clients to fight the it?s-too-late-urge.

Publicity is like the little waves you make when you toss pebbles into a lake. The waves travel, travel, travel and eventually come back to you. If you stop lobbing little stones, you lose momentum. It?s never too late and it?s never too early to promote. Rearrange your thinking. Marketing isn?t about a single book. It?s about building a career. And new books can build on the momentum created by an earlier book, if you keep the faith. Review the marketing ideas in this book, rearrange your schedule and priorities a bit, and keep at it.

Here are a few keep-at-it ideas.

*Run a contest on your Web site, on Twitter, or in your newsletter. Use your books for prizes or get cross-promotion benefits by asking other authors for books; many will donate one to you in trade for the exposure. Watch the 99 Cent Stores for suitable favors to go with them.

Hint: Any promotion you do including a contest is more powerful when you call on your friends to tell their blog visitors or Facebook pals about it.

*Barter your books or your services for exposure on other authors? Web sites.

*Post your flier, brochure, or business card on bulletin boards everywhere: In grocery stores, coffee shops, Laundromats, car washes, and bookstores.

*Offer classes in writing to your local high school, college, or library system. Publicizing them is easy and free. When appropriate, use your own book as suggested reading. The organization you are helping will pitch in by promoting your class. The network you build with them and your students is invaluable. Use this experience in your media kit to show you have teaching and presentation skills.

*Slip automailers into each book you sell or give away for publicity. Automailers are envelopes that are pre-stamped, ready to go. Your auto mailer asks the recipient to recommend your book to someone else. Your mailer includes a brief synopsis of your book, a picture of the cover of your book, your book?s ISBN, ordering information, a couple of your most powerful blurbs, and a space for the reader to add her handwritten, personal recommendation. Make it clear in the directions that the reader should fill out the form, address the envelope, and mail it to a friend. You may offer a free gift for helping out, but don?t make getting the freebie too tough. Proof-of-purchase type schemes discourage your audience from participating.

*Send notes to your friends and readers asking them to recommend your book to others. Or offer them a perk like free shipping, gift wrap, or small gift if they purchase your book for a friend. That?s an ideal way to use those contact lists you?ve been building.

*While you?re working on the suggestion above, put on your thinking cap. What directories have you neglected to incorporate into your contact list? Have you joined any new groups since your book was published? Did you ask your grown children for lists of their friends? Did you include lists of old classmates?

*Though it may be a bit more expensive than some ideas in this book, learn more about Google?s AdWords and AdSense. Learn about these opportunities on your Google account page. Many authors of niche nonfiction or fiction that can be identified with often-searched-for keywords find this advertising program effective.

*Check out ad programs like Amazon?s Vine review service. You agree to provide a certain number of books to Amazon and pay them a fee for the service. Amazon arranges the reviews for you. It?s expensive, but it gets your book exposed to Amazon?s select cadre of reviewers who not only write reviews for your Amazon sales page but also may start (or restart!) a buzz about your book.

*Some of your reviews (both others? reviews of your book and reviews you?ve written about others? books) have begun to age from disuse. Start posting them (with permission from the reviewer) on Web sites that allow you to do so. Check the guidelines for my free review service blog at www.TheNewBookReview.blogspot.com

*Connect and reconnect. Start reading blogs and newsletters you once subscribed to again. Subscribe to a new one. Join a writers? group or organization related to the subject of your book.

*Record a playful message about your book on your answering machine.

*When you ship signed copies of your book, include a coupon for the purchase of another copy for a friend?signed and dedicated?or for one of your other books. Some distributors insert fliers or coupons into your books when they ship them for a fee.

*Adjust the idea above to a cross-promotional effort with a friend who writes in the same genre as you. He puts a coupon for your book in his shipments; you do the same for him in yours.

*Donate your book to contests run by other authors. In return they promote your book for you and provide links to your Web site or blog.

Explore the opportunities for speaking on cruise ships. Many have cut back on the number of speakers they use, but your area of expertise may be perfect for one of them. I tried it, but found ship politics a drawback. Still many authors like Allyn Evans who holds top honors in Toastmasters and Erica Miner have used these venues successfully. For help with the application process from beginning to end, contact Daniel Hall at speakerscruisefree.com.

Rates plunge at weekly Treasury auction (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Interest rates on short-term Treasury bills plunged in Monday's auction with the rate on six-month bills marking the lowest level on record.

The Treasury Department auctioned $29 billion in three-month bills at a discount rate of 0.015 percent, down from 0.035 percent last week. Another $27 billion in six-month bills was auctioned at a discount rate of 0.045 percent, down from 0.080 percent last week and the lowest rate ever, according to Treasury.

The three-month rate was the lowest since three-month bills averaged 0.005 percent on Dec. 8, 2008, during the financial crisis.

Rates on Treasury securities have remained at low levels in recent weeks even after after credit rating agency Standard & Poor's lowered its rating on long-term Treasury debt by one notch from AAA to AA+ on Aug. 5.

The discount rates on the Treasury bills auctioned Monday reflect that the bills sell for less than face value. For a $10,000 bill, the three-month price was $9,999.61. A six-month bill sold for $9,997.72. That would equal an annualized rate of 0.015 percent for the three-month bills and 0.046 percent for the six-month bills.

Buffalo Professional - Pay television industry loses record number ...

The weak economy is hitting Americans where they spend a lot of their free time: at the TV set.

They?re canceling cable and satellite TV subscriptions in record numbers, according to an analysis by the Associated Press of the companies? quarterly earnings reports.

The U. S. subscription-TV industry first showed a small net loss of subscribers a year ago. This year, that trickle has turned into a stream. The chief cause appears to be persistently high unemployment and a housing market that has many people living with their parents, reducing the need for a separate cable bill.

But it?s also possible that people are canceling cable in favor of cheap Internet video. Such a threat has been hanging over the industry. If that?s the case, viewers can expect more restrictions on online video, as TV companies and Hollywood studios try to make sure that they get paid for what they produce.

In a tally by the AP, eight of the nine largest subscription- TV providers in the U. S. lost 195,700 subscribers in the April-to- June quarter.

That?s the first quarterly loss for the group, which serves about 70 percent of households. The loss amounts to 0.2 percent of their 83.2 million video subscribers.

The group includes four of the five biggest cable companies, which have been losing subscribers for years. It also includes phone companies Verizon Communications and AT&T Inc. and satellite broadcasters DirecTV Group and Dish Network Corp. These four have been poaching customers from cable, making up for cable- company losses ? until now.

The phone companies kept adding subscribers in the second quarter, but DirecTV and Dish combined lost them, a first for the U. S. satellite TV industry.

The AP?s tally excludes Cox Communications, the third-largest cable company, and a bevy of smaller cable companies. Cox is privately held and does not disclose subscriber numbers.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett estimates that the subscription-TV industry, including the untallied cable companies, lost 380,000 subscribers in the quarter. That?s about one out of every 300 U. S. households, and more than twice the losses in the second quarter of last year. Ian Olgeirson at SNL Kagan puts the number even higher, at 425,000 to 450,000 lost subscribers.

The second quarter is always the year?s worst for cable and satellite companies, as students cancel service at the end of the spring semester. Last year, growth came back in the fourth quarter. But looking back over the past 12 months, the industry is still down, by Moffett?s estimate. That?s also a first.

The subscription-TV industry is no longer buoyed by its first flush of growth, so the people who cancel because they?re unemployed are outweighing the very small number of newcomers who?ve never had cable or satellite before. Dish CEO Joe Clayton told analysts on a conference call that the industry is ?increasingly saturated.?

But like other industry executives, Clayton sees renewed growth around the corner. Though his company saw the biggest increase in subscriber flight compared with a year ago, he blamed much of that on a strategic pullback in advertising, which will be reversed before the end of the year.

Other executives gave few indications that the industry has hit a wall. For most of the big companies, the slowdown is slight, hardly noticeable except when looking across all of them. Nor do they believe Internet video is what?s causing people to leave.

Glenn Britt, the CEO of Time Warner Cable, said the effect of Internet video on the number of cable subscribers is ?very, very modest,? in fact, so small that it?s hard to measure.

SNL Kagan?s Olgeirson said the people canceling subscriptions behind, or never signing up, are an elusive group, difficult to count. Yet he believes the trend is real, and he calls it the ?elephant in the room? for the industry.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that young, educated people who aren?t interested in live programs such as sports are finding it easier to go without cable. Video-streaming sites like Netflix.com and Hulu.com are helping, as they run many popular TV shows for free, sometimes the day after they air on television.

In June, the Nielsen Co. said it found that Americans who watch the most video online tend to watch less TV. The ratings agency said it started noticing last fall that a segment of consumers were starting to make a trade-off between online video and regular TV. The activity was more pronounced among people ages 18 to 34.

Olgeirson expects programmers to keep tightening access to shows and movies online. A few years ago, Olgeirson said, ?they threw open the doors,? figuring they?d make money from ads accompanying online video besides traditional sources such as the fees they charge cable companies to carry their channels. But if it looks as if online video might endanger revenue from cable, which is still far larger, they?ll pull back.

?Are they really going to jeopardize that? The answer is no,? Olgeirson said.

Libyan rebels say they are attacking Tripoli (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Libyan rebels said they launched an attack on Tripoli in coordination with NATO late Saturday, and Associated Press reporters heard unusually heavy gunfire and explosions in the capital. The fighting erupted just hours after the opposition captured the key city of Zawiya nearby.

Gunbattles and mortar rounds were heard clearly at the hotel where foreign correspondents stay in the capital. Explosions also sounded in the same area as NATO aircraft carried out heavy bombing runs after nightfall.

"We planned this operation with NATO, our Arab associates and our rebel fighters in Tripoli with commanders in Benghazi," Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, the head of the rebel leadership council, told the Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera. Benghazi, hundreds of miles east of Tripoli, is the rebels' de facto capital.

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim appeared on Libyan television to deny that there was an uprising in Tripoli.

"Sure, there were some armed militants who escaped into some neighborhoods and there were some scuffles, but we dealt with it within a half hour and it is now calm," he said.

The claims from both sides could not immediately be independently verified.

Rebels fighting to oust Gadhafi have scored a number of victories in the six-month civil war, only to see towns fall out of their hands. Now the momentum appears to have firmly swung in the opposition's favor after months of near-deadlock.

Col. Fadlallah Haroun, a military commander in Benghazi, said the battles marked the beginning of Operation Mermaid ? a nickname for Tripoli. He also said the assault was coordinated with NATO. Haroun told the AP that weapons were assembled and sent by tugboats to Tripoli on Friday night.

"The fighters in Tripoli are rising up in two places at the moment ? some are in the Tajoura neighborhood and the other is near the Matiga (international) airport," he told the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera. Tajoura has been known since the beginning of the uprising in February as the Tripoli neighborhood most strongly opposed to Moammar Gadhafi's regime.

Earlier Saturday, the government organized a trip for reporters to the airport to show them it was still in government hands.

The head of the rebel's leadership council said they chose to start the assault on Tripoli on the 20th day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which fell on Saturday. The date marks the ancient Islamic Battle of Badr, when Muslims conquered the holy city of Mecca in A.D. 624.

A representative for Tripoli on the rebel leadership council told the AP that rebels were surrounding almost every neighborhood in the capital, and there was especially heavy fighting in Fashloum, Tajoura and Souq al-Jomaa.

Those three neighborhoods have been bubbling with discontent ever since the beginning of the Libya uprising. They paid the highest price in deaths when protesters took the streets in anti-Gadhafi protests, only to be met with live ammunition by government militiamen.

"We don't have exact numbers yet, but we are hearing that many fighters have fallen ? very likely over 100," said Mohammed al-Harizi.

State television showed calm, aerial scenes of Tripoli in the daytime and shots of a very sparse Green Square in Tripoli, the epicenter of pro-Gadhafi rallies since the uprising began.

In Benghazi, thousands of Libyans celebrated in the main city square, shooting fireworks and guns into the air, and waving the rebel tricolor flag.

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless Signal [Night School]

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless SignalYou've picked your router and set up all the basics, so now it's time to optimize your network. In this lesson, we're going to look at how to improve your network's speed and wireless signal so it's operating at full capacity.

In theory, your network should work just fine as-is, but we all know that reality can differ from what should ideally be the case. How well your router performs is going to depend on a lot of factors, so these tips and tricks might work better for some than others. For example, strategies for improving your wireless signal aren't going to do much unless your router is dealing with some interference. On the other hand, tweaks can only do so much if you're dealing with really bad interference. That said, whether the improvement is marginal or great, we're going to look at all sorts of ways to get your network running as fast and efficiently as possible.

Use Your Wires Whenever Possible

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless SignalWi-Fi is nice, but it's rife with signal issues and slower than a wired ethernet connection?even when Wi-Fi is performing its best. If you can wire up your devices, you should. When transferring files between devices you'll always get better performance over a wire, and internet connections over 25mpbs will also benefit from wires. That may seem strange when many routers advertise wireless speeds that are much higher, but real-world performance is generally far lower.

If you can't wire up your home, power line ethernet adapters (like Belkin's gigabit option) can be a good alternative. It's pretty rare that you'll have a power line capable of maintaining gigabit speeds, but you may still achieve better performance than you would over the air with 802.11n. If you want to give power line adapters a shot, just buy a set from a store with a good return policy and see how they work. If they don't, you can always take them back. If they do, you can buy as many as you need. Just be sure to test them on every outlet you're going to use, since some outlets work better than others with power line adapters.

Check out our guide on ditching wireless and going completely wired in your home for more tips.

Improve Your Wi-Fi Signal

There are plenty of tricks you can employ to improve your Wi-Fi signal. Your mileage may vary depending on your situation, but most methods are pretty easy and worth a look. In this section, we're going to take a look at our favorites. They're all things you can accomplish with very little effort.

Choose the Best Wireless Channel

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless SignalWhile radio frequency interference is going to be an issue in your home, one of the biggest causes of interference that'll slow down your Wi-Fi speed is other Wi-Fi routers in your area. That's often because most Wi-Fi routers default to the same channels: 6 or 11. (You don't need to understand all of this to fix the problem, but we'll explain.) Additionally, the standard channel width is 20 MHz, which means that even though you're on channel 6, which has a frequency of 2.437 GHz, your channel width spans 20 MHz around that frequency. Since each channel is only 5 MHz apart from the next, your signal is bleeding into the others. While you can adjust the channel width, this may only help some of the time as your router's needs will change. Ideally channel width would be adaptive, but since that isn't a reality the best thing you can do is pick a channel as far from the others as possible.

Previously mentioned wireless network locater WiFi Stumbler is a webapp that provides a simple way to check what channels are in use in your computer's range. Simply look for the channel with as much space around it as possible and use that channel instead of what you're currently using. Also note that while you may pick up competing signals on the same channel, if they're all very weak that can be a better choice than choosing a lesser-used channel with a strong, competing signal.

Basically, if your neighbor's on channel 1 and a few people down the block are using channel 4 (and you're somehow picking up their Wi-Fi), you're still probably better off using channel 4 for your Wi-Fi. That is, unless there's a huge amount of interference on channel 5. As you can see it can get a little tricky, but the goal is to pick a channel that keeps its distance from other signals with the same or overlapping frequencies.

We discussed where to change this settings in the previous lesson, but you'll generally find it in your basic wireless settings on your router. It tends to sit in the same section as your SSID.

Boost Your Signal's Transmit Power

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless SignalYour Wi-Fi router transmits its signal with a set amount of power, but that's something you can adjust. In theory, if your signal sucks you'd want to just transmit it as powerfully as possible. In reality, boosting your router's transmit power too much can actually make things worse. But there's a magic number: 70 mW.

In general, your router's transmitting at 28 mW, but most routers can handle 70 mW without issue. According to the DD-WRT documentation, setting this any higher could fry your router's radio chip because your router's not designed to handle the excess heat. You technically can turn it all the way up to 251 mW, but if you do you're just asking for trouble. If your router overheats, it's going to perform far worse?or die. Staying in a safe range may only show marginal improvements, but that's much better than a dead router.

Unfortunately most routers don't allow you to boost your transmit power, so if you're not using custom firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato, you're probably out of luck on this one. If that includes you, just read on as the next section can help solve signal issues with virtually any router.

Extend Your Signal with DIY Projects

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless SignalSometimes router settings just aren't going to cut it, so you need to put on your tinkering hat and make a DIY booster. In episode four of the Lifehacker Show, we built this simple Windsurfer booster out of card stock and tinfoil. On top of that, we have many more Wi-Fi boosting projects, such as this tin can extender or a repurposed satellite dish. There are also several range-boosting products on the web (like this one), but if you can avoid shelling out another $70, it's worth giving a DIY option a try.

Use QoS to Help Prevent Bandwidth Hogging and Network Overloads

Know Your Network, Lesson 3: Maximize Your Speed, Performance, and Wireless Signal In our previous lesson we talked a little bit about Quality of Service, which is essentially a set of rules that throttles bandwidth when a person (your roommate) or application (BitTorrent) is trying to hog it all. Say, for example, you want to video chat while your roommate is downloading a movie. QoS helps make sure both endeavors have enough bandwidth. We have a full guide on configuring QoS, but here's a quick overview of what you need to do.

First things first, navigate to your router's QoS page (if it exists?not all router firmwares have this feature) and enable QoS. That's not going to do anything yet, because we have some settings to fill out first, but I always forget to enable features so I like to do that first. In your QoS settings you should have a few settings and toggles to deal with. Here's a quick look at your options in DD-WRT (note: this will vary from router to router, but obviously we can't go over every single brand's firmware):

  • WAN, LAN, or Both - Generally QoS is used to handle traffic from outside your local network, so it defaults to WAN (Wide Area Network). Unless you have a reason to change it, just leave this setting as-is.
  • Packet Scheduler - This can be set to HTB or HFSC. HTB is the default method that uses a "token" system to manage bandwidth. Don't change this to HFSC unless you know what you're doing.
  • Uplink and Downlink - Here you can set a limit for the total network bandwidth can be used on your network. If you don't want to max out your connection, you can set these speeds to less than their theoretical maximums. DD-WRT recommends 80-95% for uplink and 80-100% for downlink.

Once you've got those global settings taken care of, you can start specifying rules. DD-WRT splits these rules up into three categories: Services, Netmask, and MAC priorities.

Services Priority will let you set bandwidth priorities for different applications. These applications are pre-set and include everything from SMTP to BitTorrent to Xbox Live. If a particular service isn't listed, you can add it yourself.

Netmask Priority can give bandwidth priority to a range of IP addresses. For example, if you have three computers that use the IP addresses 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.11, 192.168.1.12, you can specify that range to receive priority. This can be useful if you want to ensure that your machines will always take priority over any guest computers that show up on your network.

MAC Priority is a way to set which specific devices receive priority over others. Here you enter your device's MAC address (a MAC address is a unique identifying address for your computer's network adapter) and set a relevant priority.

Once you've chosen a service, IP range, or MAC address, and added it to your priorities list, you have to actually define the priority. By default the priority will be set to Standard, but you can promote it to Express or Premium to give it a higher bandwidth priority over other items on the list. These categories are good for applications that will sometimes require additional bandwidth, such as video chat and VOIP. You can also set any item to Exempt to let the app or computer use as much bandwidth as it wants and Bulk if you want it to only use bandwidth that is left over from other applications.

After you've finished adding all your devices and setting their priorities, you can save your settings and let your router reboot (if necessary). That's really all you have to do to get QoS working.

That's all we've got for today's lesson. Join us again tomorrow when we'll be going over how to set up your computers for remote access. If you've missed any previous lessons, you can always find them on the Lifehacker Night School tag page.

It also involves taking in of food that will aid in the elimination of toxins like high fiber food and water. It generally suggests a high intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and lots of fluids, while cutting down on caffeine, alcohol, yeast and sugars.

So why go for a detox diet? If youre a regular fast food chain eater, youve probably ingested many fat-soluble chemicals contained in the French fries, cheeseburgers, twisters and soft drinks youve consumed. An overload of these chemicals in the body can lead to illness and conditions like liver malfunction, kidney problems, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and inefficient metabolism. And the most common symptoms of these illnesses are the usual fatigue, poor skin and low tolerance to pain.

By going on a detox diet, people would have improved energy, clearer and fairer skin, a regular bowel movement, improved metabolism and digestion, increased concentration. Generally, it spells wellness and a better well-being.

A word of cautionthough anyone is allowed to take on a detox diet, pregnant women or those who are nursing are cautioned not to go on such plans as they need the necessary nutrient for nursing. And unless recommended by a doctor, people with anemia, eating disorders, heart disease, low immunity, low blood pressure, ulcers, cancer, the underweight or those suffering from alcohol or drug dependency should try on a detox diet. Furthermore, such detox diet programs should be properly planned with the doctor and a nutritionist.

Other Things You Need to Know

Side effects may occur within the first few days of starting the detox diet. Theres headache and a general feeling of weakness as the body is adjusting to the change in food intake. So it is recommended to start your diet plan gradually or on Fridays when you wont be doing much physical activity or requiring much energy. Others may experience diarrhea as the body eliminates the toxins, so take care not to be dehydrated. Drink plenty of water.

Take note that such detox diet programs should not be done for a long time. They are normally recommended to be done at least one to two times a year, and should be done during the warm months.

If youre thinking of getting started, make sure you consult a doctor or a nutritionist. Read up on detox diets and seek advice from the experts. Remember: Too much is bad. After all, youre doing it to improve your health, not ruin it!

The Sims 3 Pets has unicorns, there is much rejoicing -Destructoid

Ok, I honestly wasn't the slightest bit interested in The Sims 3 Pets prior to this trailer. Yeah, The Sims are fun, but pets have never really struck my fancy. However, there are unicorns. Yes, single-horned horses of the whitest coat with the most elegant goatees you'll ever see.

Unicorns may be lost to us now, but they can live on through The Sims. God bless you, Sims; you've preserved the once proud and elegant species for future generations to behold.
