BSkyB to buy back shares and hikes dividend 20 pct (AP)

LONDON ? Satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting PLC confirmed widespread speculation by announcing a big return of cash to shareholders while reporting a 23 percent gain in operating profit.

The satellite broadcaster, which is 39 percent owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said Friday it is raising its full-year dividend by a hefty 20 percent and revealed plans for a 750 million pounds ($1.2 billion) share buyback program.

"This may not be enough for the mega bulls, but a good start in our view," said Steve Liechti, analyst at Investec Securities.

BSkyB shares were up half a percent to 720 pence in early trading on the London Stock Exchange. They had been trading at 850 pence in early July before the phone hacking scandal at News Corp.'s News of the World tabloid became particularly acute.

The market was expecting some sort of return to shareholders after News Corp. withdrew its bid for the 61 percent of shares it does not own. The bid was shelved earlier this month after the phone hacking revelations by the News of the World, which was subsequently closed down.

James Murdoch remained in place as chairman of BSkyB following Thursday's board meeting, despite concerns that more of his time will be taken up in dealing with the fallout of the hacking scandal which has so far led to the resignation of two senior News Corp. executives.

"The board discussed governance generally, that included the role of the chairman," said BSkyB CEO Jeremy Darroch. "In the end the board was unanimous in its conclusions."

Adjusted operating profit, excluding one-time gains a year ago, rose to 1.1 billion pounds from 872 million pounds a year earlier. On the net level, profits were 8 percent lower at 810 million pounds ($1.3 billion).

Revenue was up 16 percent to 6.6 billion pounds.

During the year, the company passed the 10 million customer mark, and it said 27 percent of its customers have signed up for its triple play of television, broadband and telephone, up from 21 percent a year earlier.

"It is to the credit of Sky's first-class management team that the company has continued to deliver throughout the offer period that ended earlier this month," Murdoch said.

As part of the share buyback plan, BSkyB said News Corp. had agreed to sell shares to insure that its stake does not increase its stake above the present 39 percent.

BSkyB, which has built its success on a stable of exclusive sports rights and movies, added Formula 1 racing to its schedule in a deal with the British Broadcasting Corp.

The BBC, which had exclusive rights to show Formula 1 but is under pressure to cut costs, has agreed to a deal in which it continues to broadcast half of the races including the season finale while BSkyB gained rights to show all of them.

Darroch declined to say how much it had paid to add an attraction in "the top tier of sports property."

Lockheed Martin 2Q profit falls 10 percent (AP)

NEW YORK ? Lockheed Martin Corp.'s profit slipped 10 percent in the second quarter as the aerospace and defense contractor dealt with severance pay matters and increased pension costs.

But the company's results managed to top analysts' expectations, and its revenue climbed despite pressure from reduced government spending.

Lockheed also raised its 2011 earnings guidance to a range above Wall Street's forecast. The Bethesda, Md., company lifted the low end of its revenue guidance, but reduced the high end of that outlook.

Lockheed's stock rose $1.52 to close at $80.82 Tuesday.

For the quarter ended June 26, Lockheed reported net income of $742 million, or $2.14 per share, down from $824 million, or $2.22 per share, a year earlier.

A job cuts-related charge, which is tied to its aeronautics and space systems units, lowered earnings by 18 cents per share.

In June Lockheed said it planned to cut 1,200 employees in its space systems equipment division. Two weeks later the company said it planned to cut 1,500 additional jobs within its airplane-making business. Lockheed said Tuesday that the aeronautics cuts are being made in part because of lower government spending.

Lump-sum severance payments are expected to be made during the second half of the year, but Lockheed said that it expects to make back a "substantial amount" of the severance charge from future sales of products and services to the government and other customers.

The job reduction news continued last week when Lockheed announced a voluntary layoff program for about 6,500 U.S.-based employees. The program will be offered to salaried employees in the corporate headquarters and enterprise business services organizations.

Lockheed, designs, manufacturers and services high-tech systems used in defense, space, intelligence and security applications. Its products include satellites, aircraft, weapons and software. The company employs about 126,000 people worldwide.

Lockheed said pension costs reduced its quarterly earnings by 41 cents per share. The current quarter's results also included a tax benefit of 26 cents per share that somewhat offset the severance charge and pension costs.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet predicted adjusted earnings of $1.94 per share.

"During the second quarter, we had strong execution across the company even while implementing difficult measures to rightsize our business for an environment that remains challenging," Chairman and CEO Bob Stevens said in a statement.

Quarterly revenue rose 2 percent to $11.55 billion from $11.28 billion on increased revenue at the company's aeronautics and electronic systems segments.

The performance beat Wall Street's revenue estimate of $11.45 billion.

Lockheed said its aeronautics revenue improved partly because of more work on F-35 jet contracts, while the electronic systems unit was partially helped by increased volume on a variety of air defense programs and more deliveries on tactical missile programs.

The company reported that its backlog was at $77.3 million at quarter's end. This compares with a backlog of $78.4 million as of Dec. 31, 2010.

Lockheed now foresees 2011 earnings of $7.35 to $7.55 per share on revenue of $46 billion to $47 billion. The company's previous guidance was for earnings between $6.95 and $7.25 per share, with revenue in a range of $45.75 billion to $47.25 billion.

Analysts expect full-year earnings of $7.27 per share on revenue of $46.68 billion.

Computer-Aided Mammography Doesn't Improve Breast Cancer Detection: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- The widely used mammography software known as computer-aided detection (CAD) doesn't improve detection of invasive breast cancer, new research suggests.

But CAD does increase the chances that a woman will be called back for further testing, according to the study, published July 27 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

"All in all, we found very little impact of CAD on the outcomes of mammography," said study author Dr. Joshua J. Fenton, an assistant professor of family and community medicine at the University of California, Davis.

With colleagues, Fenton analyzed 1.6 million screening mammograms from seven states and the records of the nearly 685,000 women who got them from 1998 to 2006. Three out of four mammograms done in the United States include CAD, the authors said.

To determine if CAD aided breast cancer detection, they examined the detection rate when the software was used, and the stage and size of the cancer when diagnosed. They also looked at how many women were called back for further testing who didn't have breast cancer.

"We found that CAD has a slightly increased chance [that] a woman would be recalled unnecessarily for further testing, but it did not increase the chance that the breast cancer would be detected at an earlier stage," Fenton said.

The study indicated that for every 200 women who are screened with CAD who have a second mammogram, one additional woman is called back unnecessarily for further testing, he said.

When Fenton's team looked only at early-stage cancer known as DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), they found a trend to increased detection with CAD, but it was not statistically significant.

Overall, the detection rates with and without CAD were similar, the study said.

Use of CAD, which identifies areas of potential abnormalities so the radiologist can take a closer look, has boomed in recent years, even though previous research has not demonstrated a clear benefit, Fenton said.

Congress mandated that Medicare reimburse for CAD in 2001, and most private insurers followed suit, he said, explaining the growing popularity.

Based on previous research, Fenton reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 that CAD was linked with reduced accuracy of mammogram interpretations but did not affect the detection rate of invasive breast cancer.

In the current study, Fenton's team said the costs of CAD -- about an additional $12 per mammogram -- may outweigh the potential benefits. Annually, direct costs to Medicare top $30 million, a study published last year in the Journal of the American College of Radiology found.

Dr. Carol Lee, a New York radiologist and spokesperson for the Breast Imaging Commission of the American College of Radiology, said the new study looks at CAD in real-life settings. "What this is saying is, in actual practice, when you look in the community, it doesn't seem to be living up to what earlier studies with different designs promised," she said.

But, "I don't think based on this study we should abandon the use of CAD," she added.

For one thing, it's not clear whether the radiologists were trained to use CAD correctly, she said. The authors also point this out as a possible limitation.

The trend to CAD picking up more early-stage cancers is worthwhile, she said.

Lee also said a woman is unlikely to know whether her mammogram included CAD unless she asks the doctor.

In its practice guidelines on mammography, the American College of Radiology says that CAD ''may slightly increase the sensitivity of mammographic interpretations." It also notes that CAD may be linked with increased recall of patients, some unnecessary. Under the guidelines, CAD is not considered standard of care.

Walmart Supercenter?slated for Denton

National retailer Walmart said it will break ground on a Supercenter in Denton the week of Sept. 19. The 152,888-square-foot store will offer apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home, fine jewelry, an outdoor garden center and health and beauty products. It will also feature a full line of groceries, as well as a bakery, a delicatessen, a frozen-food section and meat, dairy and fresh produce. The store will also contain a Subway sandwich shop. Approximately 250 people will be employed in the Supercenter, which is expected to open in summer 2012. Walmart operates 35 stores and 12 Sam?s Clubs in Maryland, employing 17,678 associates. It works with 1,359 suppliers throughout the state. In 2011, Walmart and Sam?s Clubs locations and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $10.7 million in cash and in-kind donations to local organizations in Maryland.

Annapolis Town Centre?wins award from MEDA

The Annapolis Town Centre, a 2 million-square-foot, mixed-use development of Owings Mills-based Greenberg Gibbons, received the MEDA Economic Development Redevelopment Project Award from the Maryland Economic Development Association. The award recognizes the positive impact of a redevelopment project, including coordination of partnerships, leverage of resources, innovation and creativity, community revitalization, impact upon the tax base, enhancement of community life, and environmental stewardship. Annapolis Towne Centre was honored for its innovative mix of retail, dining, office space and residential housing. The center was also recognized for its smart design, environmental sustainability and effective partnerships, and for generating $75 million in compensation for local employees.

Blair Towns project certified?by USGBC as EBOM Platinum

The Tower Cos., a Rockville-based real estate development company, announced that the U.S. Green Building Council certified its Blair Towns project in Silver Spring as LEED Platinum under the Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance rating system. The company said the 27-acre residential project is the world?s first multifamily residential project to be awarded the highest LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) certification under the EBOM standard. In 2004, the one- to three-bedroom townhomes were USGBC LEED-certified for new construction, making them the first certified apartments in the country. Tower has 11 LEED certifications, three of which are Platinum.

Energy assessment?pays off for Hopkins

Global Facility Solutions of Baltimore said it completed retrofitting services at three Johns Hopkins Medicine facilities under the BGE Smart Energy Rewards program, resulting in BGE rebates of $15,000 per facility as well as ongoing energy savings. Retro-commissioning services were performed throughout more than 245,000 square feet of space at the Johns Hopkins Health Care and Surgery Center, Green Spring Station Pavilions I and II in Lutherville, and the Johns Hopkins Health Care and Surgery Center in White Marsh. GFS worked with facility engineers and subcontractors to assess HVAC equipment and controls, and identified and corrected deficiencies and calibration issues. GFS also trained facility engineers on methods to maintain ongoing system performance.

Town Center at Arundel Preserve?mixed-use project nears completion

Construction is nearing completion on the Town Center at Arundel Preserve, a multi-faceted mixed-use community that will consist of 242 ultra-luxury apartment homes, a 150-room full-service hotel and more than 18,000 square feet of complementary retail space designed to service both Town Center residents and the surrounding residential and business communities. Contained within The Hotel at Arundel Preserve will be Grillfire, a restaurant that is scheduled to open its inaugural location in Maryland this month. The Town Center at Arundel Preserve is a project of Southern Management Corp. of Vienna, Va., a residential and commercial real estate company that owns and manages more than 24,000 apartment homes throughout the Baltimore/Washington region. Southern Management is the developer of the hotel, apartment and retail portions of the community. The George Martin Group is the independent operator of Grillfire, a popular American Grill concept in the New York area that has targeted the Maryland region for its next wave of expansion. Rangoli, an Indian Bistro, has signed a lease in the street-level retail section of the project and two more restaurants are close to signing leases.

Former Calvert School building?transformed into apartments

The 110-year-old building at 10 W. Chase St. that once housed the Calvert School, an independent private school that offers a home-schooling curriculum, has been returned to life as The Calvert Apartments by developer Walid Hajj. Hajj?s WRH Property Holdings LLC transformed the old Calvert School building into 13 studio lofts, as well as one- and two-bedroom apartments. Hajj teamed with local businessman and developer Jack Luetkemeyer to form Chase Street Apartments LLC, the entity that owns and is managing the project. The Mullan Contracting Co. of Lutherville oversaw the renovation, which is a blend of historic preservation and original construction.

KLNB Retail marketing sale?of Lutherville strip retail center

KLNB Retail has been named the exclusive listing broker for the sale of a strip retail center at 1711 York Road in Lutherville. The owner has set an asking price of $2.4 million for the project, which is 100 percent leased to six tenants. The retail center, located approximately one mile from the York Road exit of the Baltimore Beltway (Exit 26), has a capitalization rate of 7.3 percent. Neighbors are destination retailers Best Buy, Petco and National Tire and Battery. Gil Neuman of KLNB Retail Investment Sales is overseeing marketing and sales efforts for the project. The Neuman-led team recently completed the sale of The Shoppes at Gateway Plaza in Columbia, as well as locating a buyer for the Monument Street Portfolio of retail stores in Baltimore City.

?Gently worn? clothing store?to open in August in Timonium

Uptown Cheapskate, a national franchise using a ?fashion exchange? concept that targets a 13- to 35-year-old demographic, has chosen St. John Properties? Yorkridge Center South as the site for its inaugural Baltimore-area location. Owners Emily Schramm and Nancy Kline, the latter a former South Moon Under executive, opened their first Uptown Cheapskate franchise in Salisbury in September 2010. Schramm and Kline are targeting a late summer opening for their 4,000-square-foot store at 1830 York Road in Timonium. They selected the location based on its proximity to three college campuses: Towson University, Goucher College and Stevenson University. Uptown Cheapskate, headquartered in Salt Lake City, sells ?gently worn? name-brand clothing with labels such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Citizens of Humanity, Roxy/Quiksilver, North Face, Ugg, Hollister and Juicy Couture at a fraction of their original retail sales price.

Mahan Rykiel Associates, Inc. a Baltimore-based landscape architecture, urban design and planning firm, has named Carrie Ann Miller business development director. Miller has more than 10 years of marketing experience in the architecture/engineering/construction industry. She worked recently with AmDyne Corp., and also was business development manager at KCI Technologies. Joining the firm as staff landscape architects are Katie Vocke, Blake Anderson and Justin Wilson. Vocke graduated from the University of Maryland in 2011 with a bachelor?s degree in landscape architecture. St. John Properties Inc., a Baltimore-based real estate development and management company, promoted Bill Holzman to assistant vice president, retail leasing. Holzman has been with the firm since 2007. In his new role, he will continue to oversee marketing and leasing for St. John Properties? retail holdings in Maryland and Northern Virginia, including identifying prospective tenants, negotiating new or renewal leases, and forming and maintaining relationships with retail brokerage professionals. Greenbelt Homes Inc., a 1,600-member housing cooperative in Greenbelt, named 14-year-employee Eldon Ralph as its next general manager, effective Dec. 12. Ralph joined GHI in 1997 as director of physical plant facilities and became assistant general manager in May 2008. He will succeed Gretchen Overdurff, who has managed the co-op for more than 17 years. Overdurff?s retirement takes effect Dec. 31. Ralph holds an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of the West Indies and an advanced degree in plant engineering/maintenance management from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in England.

Sharon Osbourne Taking Time Off from Work to Spend with Ozzy

Family comes first for Sharon Osbourne! The Talk cohost has revealed that she will not be appearing on the fall episodes of the chatfest, as she has decided to take some time off to spend with her husband, rocker Ozzy Osbourne.

"I've kept it no secret that I really miss my husband," Osbourne, 58, told AOLTV.com. "He'll have been on tour for 18 months by the time it's over. I've spent a lot of time away from him. He gets a break at the end of September and so I've asked [the show] for a little break so I can be with him."

Sharon's got a lot on her plate, as she also sits on the judges' panel over at America's Got Talent, but says that he departure from The Talk is only temporary. "I don't want to give [it] up. It's a great, great show. We've all worked really hard over the last year," she continued. "I'm not going to walk away from that. I just need some real good quality time to be with my hubby."

While Osbourne cites family reasons for her departure, sources behind the scenes say that tensions are running high on the set of the show, also cohosted by Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and Sara Gilbert.

"The ladies feel like the show isn't what they signed up for," an insider told Us Weekly. "Everyone is miserable. They are unhappy working there and that's the real reason why Sharon is taking a break. I really don't think she'll come back."

And there may be some truth to the whisperings. Just three months after the show premiered, "Mom on the Street" correspondent Marissa Jaret Winokur walked away, also citing family reasons.

But Sharon insists that she and the ladies are tight. "I'm very close to the women on the show," she said. "I didn't think that I would be [because] none of us knew each other going into it. We just didn't know each other socially."
